The G5 is $50 and the MX518 is around $30, considering the price, what would be a better buy? Thanks.

I have a MX518 at my office and a G5 at home. I recommend the G5 because I like the weighting and ability to change it. The MX518 is very light almost to being annoying. It does have the back and forward browser buttons, while the G5 only has a back, so its a toss up. If you need a forward browser button, or prefer a lighter mouse go MX518, if you want a solid, durable feeling mouse go G5.

I have a mx510(the non gaming version of the 518) and love it. The tracking is very clean and it is very comfortable to use.

I'm not sure what they have changed between the 510 and 518 but i think the shell is the same

I think the G7 is the G5, but wireless.

I have MX518. I think it has the back and forward buttons, what are you talking man.

The mouse isn't light, it is ok. if you are use to a light mouse then it might even appear a bit heavy but it is ok.

It takes 1-2 days to get used to.

I use it on a 17" monitor on 10X7, I think I use 800 dpi.

Have tried both. I like the mx518 more.

G5 - didn't like the texture, and I was always accidentally pressing the button to increase dpi in the middle of something.

mx518 - was to replace my mx510. it is more similar to the mx510 so that's probably why I like it more, even with less features. I personally don't have any need to adjust the weight in a mouse, it's not really noticeable to me.

no offense, but never realized that mice were such a hard thing to choose?
I guess, 'cause a few years ago, everyone had a ball and not an optical one, they can appreciate a simple cheap optical one.
lol.
It's a mouse, get something decent, the end.
Worry about the internals of the computer more.
My 2¢s....

The internals of the computer are already great, but I feel that if I have a cheap mouse that doesn't feel right, it might feel like a waste, catch my drift?

I have the G5. I love the heft that adding some weights give it. It's very solid and comfortable to use, and I find myself using the switchable DPI quite a bit, for example when doing fine work in photoshop.

G5. Although it's got the same sensitivity of the G7... extremely high. You should consider turning it down, unless your hands are stead as a rock... from god only know what. And the G7 doesn't have the ability to change weights.

G5, loving mine. I switched from an MX700. I was hesitant because I thought I'd miss that forward button that everyone made such a big deal about, but I wouldn't go back now. The response of this thing, along with the side-to-side scrolling, makes such a difference.

The only other mouse I'd want to try at this point, aside from the G7, is the Copperhead. But I love my G5.

I got the Microsoft Optical Mouse Blue USB - it helps me kick ass in Starcraft.

a 1000+ DPI mouse is better if you're playing Ghost Recon 2006 though or something like that.

don't think about price, because I know I will never use a Microsoft Wireless 2.0, it's just so crappy to me. I've bought both, and I just can't seem to figure out why Microsoft would release a product inferior to their earlier models, personally.

think about your comfort & convenience, not always about the price.

What about for playing battlefield 2? Should I use a high DPI mouse?

The G5 wins. It's no contest...
You will like the adjustable weighting. Those who don't have a G5 have no frame of reference.
You will LOVE the adjustable sensitivity. I use it all the time. Those who don't have a G5 have no frame of reference.
I use the "go back" button whenever I'm on the internet. I don't miss a "go forward" button because I've never used one.
The G5 is well worth the $$$.

Agreed on all points, except I do use the go forward button. I used the thumb button to go forward on my MX700, but after getting the G5 I just use the tilting scroll wheel to go back and forward...it's really much easier than using the thumb buttons.

G5 is garbage for gaming, the loss of the button on your thumb is to much. WTF were they thinking? I returned it the same day i got it, been using a mx518 since. If they upgraded the G5 to have two thumb buttons, id be the first one to buy it.
For non gaming: mx518 (i use the back and forward thumb buttons for everything)
For gamers: mx518
Keyboard: G15
