What? No government shutdown threads?

Well, I suppose we could use a sticky at the top of the forum for our annual budget talks, but after such repetition people just tune out and ignore the BS.

Debt "limit" is a childish game if Congress already passes a budget that reaches beyond it. Speaks more to their rampant stupidity than anything else.

Lol, I like how everyone seems to think balancing the federal budget is a simple as balancing their checkbook.

If we could get the world off the governments tit, then yea, it would be easy.

I am tired of the government supporting wall street, every little nation that ask for help, and the welfare bum who is too lazy to work.

I liken it to giving kids allowance. They wine and cry and beg for more. Usually parents are in control but in this case the kids can shop for new parents until they win.

Which is why you don't enter into the business of handouts in the first place.

It's coming. The shutdown. And soon.
Republicans will link funding the government, debt ceiling, and Obamacare via a vote this Friday. And there you have it. The perfect storm.

And I could go along with the hard line Obama will take, has taken.
Letting republicans do their dirty work, letting everything go into the crapper.
Except for and sadly, we all know what will happen in the end.
Certain "untouchables" like social security checks will be emergency funded by even hard nosed republicans fearing voter retaliation. Military pay emergency funded.
And no doubt those congressional pay checks funded.

All while the economy goes south, along with retirement savings, stock markets, 401K's, and most everything recovery related.

My point?
If this is the republican goal, their tizzy fit knee jerk, then let all the cards fall.
Every single card.
No exceptions.
No SS checks. No exemptions. No exceptions.
No duck and cover for house republicans willing to take that death dive.

If this is their wish, to kick the country in the crotch, then tie those hands behind their backs.
No defensive hand protection allowed, as the kick comes swinging to that unprotected mid area.
Feel the pain. All of it. Because THAT pain voters will not forget.
But if congress and the president, once again, together in some unholy alliance pick and chose who is exempt from feeling the pain, then voters will forget.
Will forget that full on crotch kick by house republicans.
Forget the meaning of accountability at the voting booth.
Just like last time....

I'm sorry, how did '95-96 shutdown go again? Could you please remind me? Kthxbai.

derp derp. Ball is in Republicans court. They (Congress) are going to get paid no matter what shutdown comes (or doesn't). And guess what? All the republican hater-ade in the world isn't going to take the blame. The american public is too stupid to know who is responsible for failure or issues other than the President. So with that all I can say is... Enjoy

I've got my drink and lawn chair ready.

A major plus to supporting "every little nation that ask for help" is raising their standard of living to the point that they can't steal jobs from us anymore. If you think it is in our best interest to reverse the slowing trend of off-shoring, by all means, continue to rail against foreign aid.

Texas and all the others have been told this hundreds of times, not sure it will sink in this time either.

I can see why Texas doesn't understand. After all, they are the one state that isn't in the shitty. They are the one state that was BAIRLY (literally, very little) affected by the recession that the rest of the US was losing everything to.

They clearly don't know what they are doing, eh

You're a smart one aren't 'cha? <pinches dank69's cheeks>

National debt has nothing to do with free trade.

Well, it does a little.

I tell you what, I want a deck on the back of my house. Give me your credit card number so I can pay for the deck. I only need about $2k. As for your bills, so what, ask your boss for a raise.

Texas is also required by its constitution to have a balanced budget.

Funny thing, we do not have an income tax either.

Your drink wouldn't happen to be Kool-Aid would it

"Only a third would consider President Barack Obama responsible for a shutdown, with 51% pointing a finger at the GOP - up from 40% who felt that way earlier this year," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

What does a state have to do with an individual poster other than the location of said poster?

The only reason Texas didn't go in the shitter is because they are all about drill baby drill. Enjoy the next deep water horizon event.

We do not go in the crapper because we are required by our state constitution to have a balanced budget.

Too bad the rest of the nation can not figure out how to do that.

On the grand scheme of things, if you took 100 people off the street - from different locations - different attire - all around RANDOM group of 100 people.

How many of them would say they know what is currently going on in the world?
How many of them would say they know what is currently going on locally?
How many would say they know what is going on nationally?
How many would be able to name 1 US Senator?

You're asking this question from a political website/tv-show if you know anything about politics. Something tells me if you're watching a TV station that is all about politics, you might know what is going on in politics. Ask 100 people who can't shut up about Breaking Bad if they have a single clue :hmm:

Wrong, you didn't go into the shitter because while everyone else was losing jobs, Texas was adding them. We could all add jobs if we all decided that raping the environment was a good idea.

Funny thing, we do not have an income tax either.

Texas has absurdly high property taxes which act as a defacto income tax. And that state has a constitutional requirement to have a balanced budget(which Rick Perry violated in 2001 by not calling a special session after Sept 11). That said, Texas is in debt up to our eyeballs as the state makes the local governments shoulder the debt. We are #3 in total debt per state.

And whoever said Texas didn't suffer under the recession is an idiot. That is far from the truth.

God help Texas if Congress successfully does away with or cap the tax exemption for municipal bonds.

You probably have no idea of the environmental safety laws refineries and drillers have to follow.

If places like california and florida did not ban offshore drilling they could be adding jobs to. But noooo, lets just ban entire industries from adding jobs.

We are following california in providing benefits for illegals.

Umm Texas lost plenty of Jobs during the recession. It didn't add jobs until the recovery.

Texas had near the national average unemployment for most of the recession.

IIRC, Texas started adding jobs way before anyone else.

You obviously don't know much about O&G. Most of the drilling is done on the OCS which is under federal control. So yes CA, Florida and several states have banned offshore drilling in state waters, their bans only apply to a very small sliver of land. The Feds have final say over OCS drilling and that is why there is no drilling in the Florida Gulf coast, off the Eastern Seaboard or Western Seaboard.

People forget there was a moratorium on leasing/drilling/exploring most of the OCS since 1981. And currently the only leasing/exploration allowed is in the gulf coast(sans Florida) and parts off of Alaska(but not all)
