I am going to throw this out there,

Let the government shutdown, so what.

The baby boomers helped drive us into debt, let them pay the price. Their elected representatives spent all the money they paid into social security. Why should we go into debt to back back what was already paid?

The baby boomers gave us free trade.

The baby boomers gave us excessive taxation.

Baby boomers drove excessive regulation by dumping and producing toxic/dangerous products.

It was the baby boomers lust for money that helped drive the excessive regulation we have today.

But for some reason generation x and y have to pay for it?

Nope. No where near.

Recession in every other state
:--------------------------------------------------------------------

Recession in Texas
:---

It was like a mosquito bite. It was there and gone in little time.

Do you live in Texas?

Unemployment peaked around 8.3%. Texas lost a NET of ~500,000 jobs during the recession.

Texas had massive budget shortfalls and massive funding cuts.

Recovery doesn't = recession. Texas went into a recession later and emerged sooner, but talk to plenty of Texans and they felt the recession. Anyone in the public sector, anyone in teaching, and anyone in construction.

And FYI, there are states that felt the recession LESS than Texas. About 1/3 of the states had LOWER peak unemployment than Texas as Texas was middle of the road/high middle of the road in terms of unemployment during the recession.

Some other things about texas's recovery that I found interesting;

They received some of the largest amount of stimulus money.
Government jobs was one of the biggest gains.
Texas tied for the highest number of jobs that paid below the minimum wage (they tied with Mississippi).
Texas didn't suffer as bad from the housing bust because they had stricter regulations in place regarding loans.
Of course Texas also benefited from the rise is oil prices.

That might be tied to the large immigrant population Texas has.

I wonder is seasonal migrant workers wages were included in those numbers?

The United States government does not run like a family budget. Nor should it. That analogy is not helpful to the discourse.

It is one of the largest factors in the global economy and the last time it was fucked with like this the impact was felt on Wall St. That's why business leaders are urging members of Congress not to repeat 2011's tactics.

So expect a shorter debate and quicker resolution, as campaign funds are on the line.

I'm pretty sure illegal workers (one of the few ways companies would pay below the federal minimum wage) are not counted.

You made the statement texas is second in paying below minimum wage.

What types of workers get paid below minimum wage?

In reality, all sorts. There is an epidemic of human trafficking in the US. Not sure where he is getting his numbers or what it is counting, but human trafficking is pretty bad in Texas.

But there are also a ton of family businesses as well as restaurants that try and skirt labor laws all the time.

I've stated it before and will state it again: Trying to de-fund the "Affordable Health Care Act" or "ObamaCare" as some call it, is not the proper way to go about it; laws can be overturned and there is a process in place to do so. De-funding is no different than an activist judge trying to legislate from the bench. Both are wrong.

As to the question of a government shutdown, I'm a Libertarian so while I'm not an anarchist, I do believe in as little government as is possible. Since I don't like most of what this current government does, I'm all for shutting it down for a while.

How does shutting the government down change anything? Do you think there are any negative consequences from shutting the government down?

After seeing what has come out of our government for the past decade or so I would have to say no.
You conservatives are all the same. When a D was elected governor of CT, the first thing he did was balance the budget. Decades under R control and we ran multiple $100M deficits and one D governor and D majority legislature took one year to erase it all, very nearly putting us in the black. He did it with a combo of raising taxes slightly and cutting spending (services). Fuckwit conservatives railed about raising taxes out of one side of their mouths (cut spending you fucking tax and spend liberal!) and railed about the DMV shutting half their branches and all the cops that got laid off out of the other side (how dare you lay off cops you fucking liberal!). All the same, all the same. I fully expect you to be the first one to complain about some service that gets cut if the government does shut down and you'll be happy to tell us all why it's Obama's fault.

During past shutdown threats I pretty much figured DC would swoop in at the last minute and 'save us' from their own manufactured crisis.

This time, I'm not so sure. I'd put the odds at ~60% that no deal will be reached on a continuing resolution before October 1. Boehner has definitively stated that the CR is going to be tied to defunding the ACA. Defunding the ACA will never get past the Senate or the President. Let me state that again. Never. Boehner has basically guaranteed that no deal will be reached by making that stipulation.

Frankly, I say get it over with and let it happen. The constant threat of debt default and government shutdowns for the last ~3 years has been absurd. Our country looks like a dysfunctional joke in the eyes of its citizens and the world. Maybe after a two week shutdown our representatives in DC can start to act like adults. I doubt it, but one can hope.

The debt ceiling is another matter entirely. I think Congress will agree to raise it, since they are at the beck and call of powerful people with money. I don't think those people (or anyone else with common sense, really) want the US to default on its debt. It would be bad for their checkbooks.

I was complaining about the last decade of government. The past decade would include a lot of what Bush and company did. You do realize a decade is 10 years right?

We aren't going to default on our debt. Stop it with the BS scare tactics.

Of course we are not, but you said that you would support a government shutdown which could result in republicans lowering our credit rating once again.

That doesn't change the fact that you say you want it shut down and the high probability that you will be complaining if it does, and the high probability that you will blame Obama if it does.

As usual, there is no shutdown coming.

I can't believe people still fall for this. Do you not pay any attention to history? Like really none whatsoever?
