When I left work friday night gas was $1.94 per gallon... when I drove into work this morrning gas was $2.13. Ok so what happened this weekend that called for almost a 20 cent hike in gas price?

I know gas prices were going up this summer, but now we are just getting gouged. What are my Senators Clinton and Schumer doing about this?

Screw them.. what can I do?

1.95 and rising fast here in Chester County PA. An aquaintance who owns a gas station told me to look for 10 cent a week hikes for many weeks to come

If that's gouging, then we've been getting gouged every week for more than a month out west here.

Anyway, much as it sucks, it is not gouging. Gas is a commodity and the price has been rapidly rising. Every retailer has been forced to raise their prices.
While I agree that this sucks, I find it odd that you think of this as "gouging". When the price of milk goes up at every store, do you call that gouging too? Or how about the fact that mortgage interest rates have gone up recently? The fact that they went from 5's to 6's in the past month, is that also gouging, and not market conditions?
Just curious...

Eh, go live in Europe for a few months.

Holland: $5.50/gal
UK: $5.40
Denmark: $5.25
Italy: $4.90
France: $4.65

But seriously, everything is getting more expensive around here, not just gas. Inflation is rearing its ugly little head again...

They do have a higher gas tax than we do, that's for sure. But then our prices reflect all taxes too.

Yep. Europe gets their gas as cheap as we do. In their case, their governments actually go gouge like hell on the taxes, making 4 to 5 times more per gallon than the oil companies do. Outrageous. I don't know why the people put up with it. IMO proof that Europeans are slaves to their governments.

I am aware that milk prices have gone up, but I milk prices aren't going up 19 cents in two days. Plus one of the reasons milk prices and other products have hiked up is because of the gas prices!

So what was the reason for gas prices to hike up nearly 20 cents per gallon? Did the price of crude oil jump again? Did opec cut more production? If there is no cause then yes I think it is price gouging.

Haha, that sucks. I wish these places had the common courtesy to do it at night, not in the middle of the freaking day. I really need to find a private gas station, cause those are supposed to have the cheapest gas (read 1.60 range). A news station did a report in the NYC area, and said that privately owned ones, not big company ones, tend to sell gas a lot cheaper, and still make a decent profit.

what makes you think the US doesn't tax gasoline too little? I wouldn't mind having less fricken cars on the street and less pollution.

Increasing demand from China, oil pipeline damage in Iraq, and the switch to low-sulfur or more highly refined fuels. Saudi Arabia's OPEC minster did say he wants to raise production, but China is drinking up oil more than ever. Add in the fact that our refineries are near capacity... well you are just going to have to get used to 2-3 bucks a gallon. We'd need the nuts to let us build more refineries, and we'd need the supply from OPEC and others to rise enough to offset China's demand. None of that is likely, so prices should edge up to around 2.50-3.00 bucks before the end of summer.

if you ask me... what we need is a nice "clean" source of reusable energy that isn't dependent on the middle east (or any other single region)! If gas prcies were inflated to like $5 a gallon in the US, that would create an increadible economic incentive for other technologies to be developed.

You don't pay enough in taxes already? Or you wouldn't mind having less cars on the street as long as you could still afford to drive, and it was only "the little people" who got forced onto the bus? :disgust:

I have an idea. I think there is too much stock trading, creating too much volatility in the markets. Therefore, I think we should have a $50 per share per trade tax implemented. That should fix the problem.
Of course, I don't really think that... but it's the same reasoning.

And MaDHaVoK, the price oil is up. Just shy of $40 per barrel, although it did go down a little today.

Why would that happen when such a source has already existed for more than 100 years? When Europe has been that high for more than a decade now, and there has been no change?
Your logic is lacking.

that's not the same reasoning at all.

there are a lot of "social" costs to gasonline that are not included in its mere production costs. Gasoline casuses pollution. Oil companies have no economic incentive to charge people for the cost of this pollution as that would lower their total revenues. Someone else (namely, the government) needs to step in and add badk these costs to gasoline. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to estimate the environmental cost of gasoline, but IMO it is probably more than what we are paying now.

And as for the "little guy" taking the bus... i have survived without a car and with public transportation my whole life.
