What OS to use?!?

I just got my new machine - Athlon XP 1600 - and am not sure what OS to install. I play a lot of games (CS, UR, etc.) and have heard that there are a bunch of driver issues still surrounding XP. Any reccomendations? 98SE, ME, XP? I'd rather not go with a dual boot system.

If it`s a pure gaming system then Win98SE is your best bet, otherwise WinXP I find very stable and plays lots of game fine like UT,CS,Q3 etc.I`ve two PCs one with 98 and the other with XP and I find I`m using the XP one more even for gaming.

Don`t expect XP to run all games and you won`t be disappointed.

Nope,I did have the freeze lockup sometimes on exit of CS if you use OpenGL,however I find running it in compatiability 98 mode fixes that.

Have you tried Windows 2000 pro?

I haven't had any real problems with all sorts of games, demos, betas running it.

Friend switched to XP. He's allways looking for patches and fixes for various issues.

Win2k is so much nicer than Win98SE. Far as gaming, I've read reviews that claim higher framerates in Win2k, others claim Win98SE or ME faster.

WIn98SE is still on the first choice. full compatible and fast!

WinME ... it's more stable but the i found it slower than Win98SE

Win2K.... nahh.. a lot of games won't run. it might run, but its very slow.

Win XP is a nice try... stable, powerful and so far i got no problems with it.

u may want my option: Install WinXP, then dual boot with Win98SE (with 98lite add-on) 98lite is able to remove a lot of features from windows (name it: MSIE? media player? DirectX? old win311 apps?) and remove all things u dont wanna use. I install win98se just for compatibility.

I'd say get XP or Win2K (XP is better for games, Win2K is better for compatability etc).

The problems with XP are only teething troubles which will be eventually sorted. If you go for Win98 now, you'll find yourself having to spend more money in the future to upgrade to XP eventually anyway.

Thanks for all the input guys... from this I decided to go with XP Pro. and try it out. If I have too many problems I'll reformat and go with 98SE until more patches/drivers are available for XP.

I have a partitioned HD which I have dual loading platforms of WinME / Win XP Pro.
It seems to be working great for me with no problems.
