I'm sorry to inform your best bet is a Canon i560 from Sams or Costco which includes a USB cable.
$79. It can be run very cheaply using generics or refilling.

If you're worried about it ...get the extended warranty for $5 extra. then you have 2 years. By then you'll want another printer anyway.

How old was your Canon and are you sure it's finished?

Whatever you do don't get a HP inkjet if you are doing any amount of printing.
Or a Lexmark...

If you're hell bent on not getting a Canon, get an Epson but their heads clog more frequently than Canon.

Unfortunately Canon is currently the best you can get, IMO. And the i560 as mentioned above is very nice and widely available at $80. + shipping and/or tax. Believe it or not, the i455 was just named by PC World as its general purpose printer of the year in the July issue that just arrived in my mailbox. I've got an i450 and it works fine for me and it costs me about $3. for a set of black and color generic carts for it. Hard to beat for cost of ownership. But the i560 is much better for those who print a lot as it has bigger tanks and separate tanks for each color.
. Besides it's silly to judge All by One...

I'm a fan of the HP inkjet printers. We use them for personal printers at work (private college) and have very few issues. Not sure what models run for $80 though.

Who pays for the cartridges?

Artic...

What happened to the S600?

It was a great printer in it's day but the i560 is much faster and has better print quality. Does edge to edge prints too.

You might be able to use your existing cartridges as well.

There is a Epson C84 which has a pretty good quality in terms of text and graphics printing. But since you want HP or Canon printers the Canon i560 is the best choice in that price range.

Work pays for the cartridges. Keep in mind that most people here use shared LaserJet printers, but some "special" people get their own desktop inkjet printers...

As far as I know, all printer companies hose you on the ink cartridges. That's where they make their money.

I refill the cartredges on my Canon S600 for much less than the new one would costs. Also note that my S600 is still running as strong as the day I bought it. Best printer I have ever owned. I had a BJC5000 before this one and it was a POS.

Macro2 has it right, stick with Canon.

I also have a canon i450 and I buy ink carts from monsterinkjets.com for under $2 each, my wife doesn't think twice before printing a 20-30 page report and the printer has been going strong for over a year. Newegg has the canon i350 and i455 for $50-80 both take the same cheap ink that my i450 uses.

My photo printer is an Epson Stylus Photo 785 EPX($70 refurb from epson) great photo quality I pay $3 for ink and it has served me well for about 2 years.

I would also say stay away from HP and Lexmark the initial cost of printers is low but you pay when you buy the ink.

Good luck,

Tom

I just had a piece of my printer (Epson Stylus Photo 785 EPX) come off because of a bad paper jam.

I tried to put the piece back in place and now all my printing is f&*-up.

I called a local computer store and the guy said it would be cheaper to buy a new printer than to repair this one and he said to get an HP.

Thoughts?

hrstruggle,
Since your problem is not within the purview of the warranty (if you have any left) and since you can get a refurb of the same model direct from Epson's store for $69. shipped ground which includes all new cartridges and warranty - you tell us...
. IAC, I'd be looking at a Canon. The i455 has NO RIGHT to print as well as it does (photos on glossy paper) for being only 3-color plus black and for what it costs. And Canon has a much reduced risk of clogs relative to Epsons not to mention the lower cost of consumables.

True BUT with a Canon you can circumvent that by using generics, refilling or continuous feed.

--------
Zepper, you're right.
The i455-50 is a fine printer but the i560 is really the better choice because of it's separate, larger, transparent, more versitle cartridges which can be refilled or retrofitted for continuous feed.

Macro2,
. That's what I said in one of my earlier messages re. the i560... If you print a lot, that's the one, if you don't the i455 is dandy.
