Everything else being equal, would a PIII 700E overclocked to 1Ghz be just as fast as a 1Ghz T-Bird? If that is the case, then why wouldn't a PIII 700E be a better value than an T-Bird? One can easily find a 700E for as little as $140.00 and a chance of hitting 1Ghz with a 700E is very god. I'm just wondering because I'm in the process of putting a system together and all I read about is how an Athlon is a better deal...

You can get a 700Mhz T-Bird for alot cheaper and overclock it to 1 Ghz, its not fair to compare a overclocked chip with a non-overclocked chip pricewise..

well that all depends on what he is willing to do to overclock. With a Tbird you have to do the locktight deal or pencil that doesn't last and then theres the heat issue need a high dollar cooler. With a P-3 its a trip to the bios and its done just a stock cooler will usually get ya there. The performance of the 2 are basically the same and resale value on the p-3s are better. So its a toss up if ya ask me it boils down to personal preference

The question should be:
What's a better deal,a $164 750mhz PIII o/c'd to 1Gig or a $91 750mhz T-Bird o/c'd to 1Gig.

Hmmmmm........

First off I wouldn't recomend the 750 P-3 the 700s seem to work better @ $140 and are cheaper so and there are other things to take into account. Motherboard you can now get a good Asus M/B for $105 with a 815 chipset. What's a great motherboard for Tbird go for I bet it off sets the difference pretty close.

NOS440:

Is there a difference between the Slot 1 and Socket 370 P3 -- as far as overclocking? I might be building a new P3 system and just wondered. My last Intel system was an old P2 350 on a BX. Can a P3 700 do 1 GHz?

Not really they both work fine and now Abit makes a slot 1 815 chiset board. In fact I have a nice 700E slot one cbo that I might sell.

dantess,
you gotta compare apples to apples. a 700 p3 is $140, while a 700 t-bird is $85. the mobo's are about the same. (~$120) Both may get you to 1ghz. What really matters is your preference. The t-bird outperforms the p3, but is a little harder to oc initially. At 1 ghz, your graphics card will undoubtably be your performance bottleneck anyway, at least when gaming. But for the $60 difference you could almost have 256 mb of pc-133!!($75 @pricewatch)What about a Duron 700 for $50 and still beat the p3? It's your choice, either way, enjoy yourself.

NOS440,
You hit the nail right on the head. At first, I had in mind to go the 750Mhz T-bird route but now I'm not sure if I want to deal with all the hassles that comes with it. No to mention all the incompatability issues that I've read about. I like saving money as much as anyone else, but spending $50 more for a PIII means that I don't have to put up with all the aggravation, then to me it's worth it. Good point about the resale value too!

the apps that the t-bird/Duron beat the P-3 at are not even worth talking about !! and the difference is almost not at all. I don't see your point.
