Canada thistle, golden bamboo and garlic mustard would look really good right there. Add in some orange day lilies for color and you will be all set. For the fence line plant some honeysuckle.

Since it's right there in the patio I would definitely do an herb garden. Plant some basil, oregano, and some cilantro. Or any other herbs you like maybe even a green pepper.
Plant some marigolds or mosquito plant around the edge to keep the bunny's/bugs away.

Skip anything that gets big/has thorns. It looks like a pretty small area and since it's right in the patio you don't want people getting caught on the thorns or worry about it getting over grown.

There are two of these. I have a cherry tomato plant going right now in the other one, with plenty of space for more herbs.

This one I'd like to fill with solely decorative stuff.

Would you like something tall? Or something that's smaller, close to the ground, and fills the space?

Personally, my favorite "go-to" eye catchers in the summer are sunflowers. I love to grow the yellows, maroons & mixed (yellow & maroon petals) anywhere that I have open space. They are almost foolproof as far as thriving goes if they get enough water, and they grow rather quickly from seed to bloom. (I have some pics on my FB page if you're interested)

I also agree with all the herb garden suggestions. They are incredibly useful and the right mix is quite stunning to look at!
Rosemary (blue, white, pink & purple blooms)-insect repellant, beneficial for digestive issues, gout, cough, headache, high B/P
Basil (purple & green foliage varieties)-antioxidant, antiviral & anti microbial
Chives (purple blooms)-insect repellant, beneficial to circulatory system, stimulant, diuretic, antiseptic
Lavender (purple, pink & white blooms)-fragrant, helps with: insomnia, anxiety, depression, fatigue
Mint (leaves: green, gray-green, blue, purple)(white & purple blooms)-sleep aid, diuretic, stomach pain, decongestant, anti-itch
Oregano (white & mauve blooms)-beneficial for respiratory & intestinal issues, rheumatoid arthritis, UTI's, headaches
Thyme (ground cover & filler)(pink & lavender blooms)-diuretic & urine disinfectant. Also useful for baldness, colic, diarrhea & gas

Sorry...probably more than you wanted to know!

Bleeding dingleberries. Use the crushed bones of enemies as fertilizer.

Blueberry or raspberry bush could work too.

1 cherry tomato plant
They give hundreds of delicious tomatoes, grow very easily, would fit in the space nicely (give it a cage to grow on).

edit: oh, you already have a cherry tomato...

Well then, how about a few pepper plants? You could fit 3 in there.
