Ok Atot, here is the situation.

I was driving to a job today, when my gf rang me in tears. And the kind of tears that makes your heart break.

Her pet bird is sick. She loves this bird and it needs an xray. Her mother is pure evil and would not give my gf the $200AUD to get the XRAY. Her mother said, just put the bird down. The bird is only 2 years old.

I have told my gf to take the bird back to the vet for the xray and to tell them to charge it to my credit card.

We are awaiting the results of the tests.

I was gobsmacked that her mother is such an evil bitch to just condemn the little bird to die.

What would you guys have done? Would you have the bird put down or would you pay for the basic diagnostic tests?

I wish i could have set this up as a poll, but i don't know how to set up polls.

Hmm this is interesting seem as its a lovely little bird that is only 2 years old.

See, this is why i wanted to set up a poll. This where i say, there are plenty of humans and if you were in the same room i would surely make sure that there were 2 less.

Your only a fucking human after all.

How serious are you guys?

How old is your GF?

Pics?

You have not given us much to go on...for example what is their financial situation?

Perhaps that is money that would be needed for something more important....like rent or an electric bill.

Perhaps her mother is more of a practical person than you or your GF are and does not let something like the emotional attachment to an animal get in her way.

The bottom line here is this...if you feel that strongly about it, forget the mothers viewpoint....move on and lend her or give (depending on your situation) the money...it will make you feel better it will make her feel better and you'll be her hero.

Did I already ask for pics?

I would have said "im so sorry, babe"

But Im not really a "pet" guy. Even when the family had a dog forever and I thought he was awesome (and he was) we had to put him down, it sucked, but it didnt bother me that much.

Also where are the people saying your gf is financially irresponsible for not having a couple hundred bucks available herself?

 jesus fucking christ...lol

Anyhow, $200 is way more than it costs to buy a new one, right? Let it go and just buy a new one.

Bird dies.

I wouldn't spend more than 200 bucks on a cat or dog that had been with me for 10 years.

Exactly what you did. In fact we have been there, done that with birds and even a guinea pig.

Lots of assholes in this thread. There's no question, you get the bird the x-ray, learn what the illness is and go from there. I have pet rats, and it costs me 50 USD per rat to walk in the door of the vet's office.

It depends on the situation. If it was my dog and he is only 2 years I would definitely pay to get the xray, but if he's really old and doesn't have much longer to live I would have considered putting him down. In this situation I would have paid for the Xray

people who don't fix up animals are the same fucking idiots who refuse to spend $500 to fix up their once working car and instead will fork out $30K+ because that way they'll "save money" :rollseyes; It's a lot of work to train, take care of and "love" a new animal, it's far easier to just spend the money and get it fixed up if you can, now if it requires like $10K+ in experimental surgery, then I'd give up..

So you admit there's a breaking point. Some peoples' threshold is lower than others'.

Agreed, and I don't mean to sound heartless. I hear a lot of people griping all the time how they had to pay for the dog's surgery for this or that, had to pay to have the vet help deliver the kittens, etc. *Most* of the time, I've seen this with families drowning in debt or struggling to make ends meet in the first place.

People, if you don't have the $$ to take care of your family - your first priority - don't go buy a stupid pet and sink $1000 into it for surgery, not to mention food, standard vet bills, tags, grooming, boarding while away, etc.

But that's just me. I have allergies so I can't have pets anyway

I'd say the maximum cost is based on the inherrent value of the animal. A rare boa constrictor like a moonglow or a boelyns python warrants the spending of large amounts of money because they are extremly rare and the possible profit from breeding is sure to return your investment. But for a $10 tree frog, anole, goldfish, parakeet, $200 is a bit much imo.
