Unless his girlfriend is a magician on the side, I highly doubt this is some sort of "trained" bird. You just don't train birds. You stick 'em in a cage and replace the lining and add food/water as necessary. About the only pet that requires less personal interaction is a fish.
That said, I would have probably paid for the X-ray and made a decision from there, but I have a decent amount of disposable income and it wouldn't kill me to spend $200.
Of course, there's also the (very likely) chance that it's guaranteed not to just be the X-ray. The vet probably said something like needing to have the X-ray just to know what was wrong and that it would likely cost a lot more once they knew what was wrong with it. I hope that Sea Moose has another $300-$500 to spend if it turns out that something much more expensive is needed.
As far as fleabag's inept comparison to a car goes: These birds cost between $50 and $100. A comparable situation with a $30,000 car would be someone choosing not to spend $60,000 on repairs and instead just buy another $30,000 car. Obviously pet are not cars and many people (myself included) are not willing to be so coldly calculating as to simply compare replacement cost with the cost of medical care but if you're going to create an analogy you should at least make an attempt at parity.
