Any ideas what a good PDA phone is that I can use with my verizon wireless service?
Or should i hold off to see if any new models are upcoming?

i have the xv6700, it's ok. i'd rather have the treo 700p

boss has the 750m (i think), and hates it (i hate it too)

i paid 100 for my phone though, which was the deciding factor

PDA phones typically have bad voice quality... My Samsung PDA phone is for sale if you're interested...

My understanding is the Treo's voice quality is good and same with the blackberry's. The only thing keeping me from a Blackberry with verizon is their ripoff of a blackberry service, $40 above your current plan. Not worth the cost, imo.

Wah? Unlimited internet is 45 + your phone plan. Voice quality on my XV6700 is pretty good.

the 2 that would be great are the treo 755p and vx6800 but why would anyone pay 45.00 for a data plan?

Yes, the unlimited data plan from Verizon is 44.95 a month, it's freaking crazy, I moved to AT&T when I got my iphone and saved 50 bucks a month on my freaking bill.

the best pda phone out right now for verizon is the motorola q9. it is the successor to the moto q. the 6700 phone SUCKS hard. The treo is alright.....

So many choices. My contract is up with Verizon so if getting a pda phone with a data plan is cheaper with another provider, may go that route then. Don't know why it takes verizon so long to get new phones.

Verizon has to figure out ways to make the phones bend to their corporate "vision" (IE: shove get it now down everybody's throats).

With T-Mobile you can have a Wing or Dash on about $50-60/mo total including unlimited data if you don't use a lot of voice minutes. It's EDGE though, which is slow.

There's also Mogul with Sprint SERO, but you need to get in on that quick. More info here

I cant speak for the q9, but the 6700 is a much better phone then the treo, even out of the box, but to really make it effective, you've got to play around with it to configure everything properly. I have a unofficial rom on mine that is 100x better than the original. A WM6 rom was just released as well. Ive downloaded it, but havent installed it yet.

posting in this thread 3 months later...

VZW now has both the Treo 755p and VX6800. I know one is Palm OS and the other is WM6 but is there anything the VX6800 can do better? I see it's an extremely popular phone and am comtemplating switching out of a Treo. I need mp3 and movie capability (divx?) along with adding custom apps. I know the VX can do this, but is it any better/worse? I also notice WM6 can do 320x320 now but specs say only 240x320?

The wifi is enticing too... is that basically free internet at any hotspot without having to pay Verizon any usage fees?

I have the 6800 (thru Alltel, not VZW). The whole treo line has been plagued with horrible rf. Voice quality is horrible. Well, this is true of most pda phones. You tend to sacrifice voice quality for convenience. I upgraded to a 6800 from a 6700. Phone wise, the 6800 is much better than my 6700 ever was at voice calls. I dont know if it holds true for the palm OS, but the square screen on the WM treos cant run a number of programs because of the 240x240 screen. I guess either some WM apps dont scale to that resolution or maybe lazy programming, but thats what kept me from going with one. Plus, wifi is nice, but I find I use the data so much more than I ever use the wifi. If you do decide not to get a data plan, I suggest having Verizon put a data block on the line so you dont get hit with an outrageous data bill. Some programs, if left open, can continue to use data.

A buddy of mine got the Motorola Q (original model) with Sprint, not sure if it is the same as Verizon's. He is *not* very happy with it. He said the UI is sluggish (common complaint for Motorola phones?), there is a significant delay ringing for incoming calls (e.g. I call him and my phone rings three times *before* his first ring, so people often hang up on him thinking he is not answering their calls), and worst is that he cannot receive calls while streaming data-- he doesn't even know he is receiving a call until he stops streaming and then the voicemail signals. The one thing he does like is watching TV from his slingbox to the Q. It actually works pretty well.

Sluggishness of the original Q is a fairly common issue. Its more of an issue with WM5 than the phone itself. As far as not being able to receive calls while streaming...sounds like a defective phone. I've had a Q for two years never had that issue *shrug*

The new Q, however, is a great choice. As of others have said stay away from any palm device...they just blow. The OS is 5+ years old. The BB is good, but I would stay with the WM version IMO. I prefer the Q though. Being Windows based it is as customizable as your home desktop. I have a theme on my Q that is Apple OSX based...including animated desktop icons There are also many tweaks you can do if you want. Afterall, it DOES have a registry

Anyhow, best thing is to go to the store and play with em and see what you like. I personally have tried all the current smartphones, and stayed with the Q.
