Well you almost found one! Just a few days ago one of my 'Cuda drives crashed horribly on me - total data loss!. Thing is, sh*t happens I just got a bum deal that's all - I will continue to buy these drives as long as they keep their great track record. Some people would never use Seagate drives again if it crashed on them, that's just stupid You can't make a generalized opinion on a companies product based on one bad experience, right?

(hope the RMA one i'm getting from Newegg doesn't crash, or I guess i'll eat my words? )

You should check out the new Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 drives, 40GB slimline model with FDB bearings. Model #6E040L0 its a single head single platter design and is pretty quiet. Theres no reviews for it out but they're already being shipped to OEMs and anyone fortunate enough to have seen one will tell you that it rivals the Barracuda IV in the noise department.

I think this only affects noise during seeks. Drives have had this for a while, including my 3 year old Maxtor 20GB. There are 3 AAM modes on this drive: quietest (less performance), best performance (louder), and balanced (balance between perforomance and noise). It comes default in the balanced mode, and I already can't hear the seeks. I'd switch it into quiet mode if it could reduce the baseline noise from the drive just being on, but I doubt that'd happen.

the quietest drive i have ever heard in my entire life is the liquid bearing Maxtor D740X-6L, i have 2 in my computer and i love them to death!!

also a quiet drive i recently used was a Western Digital 800BB.. that was really quiet too. props to both
