im staying with them, all hosts have an issue, something like this can happen to anyone

Hello,
At approximately 4:55am on Sunday, September 11th, 2005 the Bin server crashed hard. After the crash we found out that both the /var partition and the /backup partition were corrupt. A fsck was attempted (similar to a checkdisk scan on windows) and several data recovery teams were called in, but we were unable to salvage the data. All the files every account is avaliable, as well as all stats and mail data, but we are unable to get any mysql databases recovered. Our datacenter said it will take 24-48 hours to get the server reformated so we have decided that it will be better to simply move everybody to a different server. The last avaliable backup that we can restore of MySQL is necessary is from Feburary.

We apologize about the inconvenience and can understand your frustration. At this time we are moving accounts as fast as we can, but please contact us at support@telnap.com so that your account data can be transferred. If you choose to stay with us you will be receiving one year of free hosting, otherwise we will do anything we can to help you move to another hosting provider as soon as possible.

I cannot believe there are no off-site backups. That is one of the first things (easy & inexpensive as well) that a host should setup.
This isn't the time to bash/critique another company, they have an issue and I know for a fact he's working on it as fast as he can.

HyTek is a moron wanna-be host and shouldn't be taken seriously.

Yup, thats right Ross. Five years in business and over one thousand customers and I am a principle of a "moron wanna-be host." Right on the money.

His question was answered after his post and the following comments.

Man when a server goes down it really brings out the worst in people.

Even I was like "February!" But DeviousTrap admitted he was starting put customers on the older shared server.

You should consider On-Site backups - not on the main drive set though. So far example, you may have 3 scsi drives in a RAID5 config, but then you'd pop in a huge IDE drive. Every night MySQL could backup all of the databases to the drive. As far as site files you could just run a differential.

My telnap hosted site was up until just a couple of hours ago. I am not going to sweat it. It's just a personal sitre.

Let's face it, if you are paying ~$35 a year for a site you prolly shouldn't be hosting mission critical business websites with critical data on them, bedsides the user has the option to backup their site themselves. I have one.

Good Luck getting it resolved quickly DeviousTrap. I'll be here, not going anywhere.

The world is an imperfect place, servers crash, shoe laces break, and Hurricanes obliterate major population centers....

There is no one to blame. Things just happen... Go with it.. Takle a breath and realize that life existed long before the internet and a server crash never killed anyone...

Gotta hand it to DeviousTrap though, at least he put a note up on his website and posted here letting us know what the problem is. I guess none of you experienced the beauty and horror that was ripplehost. Where Alan would leave us all guessing for weeks or months at a time, meanwhile as it turned out ripplehost was nothing more than a locomotive under the control of a engineer that had polished off six bottles of Mad Dog and had long since passed out and slumped over the throttle.

That about sums it up for me.

If you can't afford at least $10/mo for reliable web hosting then stop complaining.

 for DT & Telnap

You can measure the quality of a host in a time of crisis.. I think DT did an EXCELLENT job in this crisis (and is still doing a great job) and I will of course continue my hosting with them. I currently host I-Hacked along with several other domains with them and have had nothing but a wonderful experience.

i do my own backups of my shared portion on whatever server my site is on
the concept of sharing a server pretty much implies that the shareres (is that a word?) know what they are doing and can handle keeping some backups and source code off-server for emergencies

if someone had "regular" web hosting , then yeah the host needs to do the backups , but in my case, i just want a slice of a server in a datacenter. that is what i get from eric. that is what i pay for.

My "attitude" speaks from five years of successful experience in this field. Off-site backups are considered common sense or rather a norm. I am also not actively seeking new customers here.
