i don't know crap about bikes but my buddy's always talking about gxr 1000 and YZF R1(?). my co-worker has a cbr 929. think those things are pretty fast.

It's a toss-up between the Suzuki GSX-1300R (Hayabusa) and the Kawasaki ZX-12R. Those are the big two when it comes to insane speed, and they're pretty close as far as performance goes. My vote goes to the Suzuki, but a lot of that's personal preference.

The hayabusa is the fastest stock bike, with the ZX-12R coming a close second. They used to make them faster, but in recent years they've put restrictors on them. Still insanely fast, but not quite as bad as before.

Ducati = the ferrari of motorcycles really. Not the fastest, but damn are they ever nice. They're well known for their superb handling.

The hayabusa has a 1300 cc engine, with the ZX-12R coming in at 1200 cc. The Ducati 998/998/996, along with the R1, GSX-R 1000 are all 1 litre (1000 cc) bikes. There are 3 "main" types of classes of engine size, 600cc, 750, and 1000, but then again there are a ton of in betweens.

As far as top end speed, the '99 Hayabusa was (and will be for the forseeable future) the fastest production motorcycle. 2000 brought in 300 kph (186 mph) restrictions on all bikes that might be sold in the EU. It is really no feat to disable the limiter though, so no problem there, but that isn't "stock".

There are turbo busas out there making somewhere around 400 hp. Again, not stock.

IMO, the squished Viper isnt a motorcycle. I would hate to have to make a sharp turn on it.

Excuse the hijack.... but why are you quoting the Bhavagad Gita in your sig Winston? I had to read it back in college (the translated version, obviously)... and man was that thing boring.

Well, there is always the turbine powered motorcycles. Jay Leno said his gets 3-4MPG though and it takes a good standing membership in the "more money than brains" club to get one.

You talking top speed, quarter mile, or in the twisties? LIke others stated before, the busa has the highest top speed. Or at least it did in 99 before they started restricting them. The current ZX-12 may be slightly faster, but only because of the busa's restrictor in 6th gear.

As far as 1/4 mile, it depends on who tests it. According to sport rider, the GSX-R1000 has the faster quarter mile (by mere hundreths of a second). The GSX-R1000 has the best power to weight ratio (or at least it did in 03). The new liter bikes coming out this year should be interesting. The redesigned Yamaha R1 for 04 is supposed to have roughly the same power and weigh the same as the 03 gixxer 1000. Also, Kawasaki has an all new zx-10r that should be pretty bad ass. It's nice to see Kawasaki finally come out with a bike that isn't such a big pig. Also, honda has their new cbr1000rr based off of their GP race bike. It should be a pretty cool bike, but I wouldn't put my money on it being the fastest in any catagory. If I had to put money on which bike will be the fastest 1/4 mile, I'd say it's a tossup between the new R1 and the gixxer 1000. Depending on how good of job Kawasaki did, the zx10r could be up there with the other two. Honda, while they make great bikes, probably won't have the fastest bike.

And as far who has the fastest bike in the twisties....that's largely dependent on the rider.

Congrats! That is precisely where it is from. Oppenheimer paraphrased it upon witnessing the first test of the atomic bomb.

I actually have a video of fastbikes magazine doing a comparison of R1 and the Busa in 1999. It shows them riding tapped out full speed on a highway in France. They have a helmet camera on the R1. The speedo is indicating 190 mph. It's actually more like 170-175mph, bikes usually are a bit generous with speedometer error. Anyway, the R1 is tapped out in 6th gear and the Busa flies by it like it's standing still. I only have 128k up, so if someone wants to host it I'll send it to them

I went riding with Malbojah into NH/VT some weeks ago. We were on I-91, and we got going pretty good.

The cars on the other side of the road might have noticed us

Yeah, but that was in NH, and we were being pretty good, at that moment, just a little over. That was a definite money making spot.
I was thinking about when we bailed on part of the VT explore, and headed north above White River Junction the first day, before it rained. It was good to "stretch our legs"
