a pillow is softer than the dashboard.

Thats what seatbelts are for.
a seatbelt keeps you from flying around, and an airbag keeps you from impact with the steering wheel or dashboard.

????
what are you confused about?

Last time I checked, when I stopped suddenly, I don't remember my face getting even slightly close to the dash board, what prevented me from this? It's called the seatbelt.

Now go drive into a steel reinforced wall at 80 and report back.

You wouldn't survive a crash at 50 or 80 so your point is moot.

Why wouldn't you survive in a crash at 50? There are a lot of factors in that.

Since you drive, I am assuimg you are over the age of 17, which makes this thread confusing because this kind of stupidity shouldn't be present once you are over that age. You don't appear to have any common sense, or any sense of how the world works, so I don't think that any of us could explain to you how stupid you sound right now. As many have mentioned the seatbelt only keeps you in place, but it doesn't stop the steering wheel cave in towards you in case of a head-on collision. Would you rather meet steel headfirst, or a firm pillow? THINK?! It doesn't matter if you are in a 50 mph / 80 mph collision, the difference is being severely hurt, or dead on impact. which one do you choose? really..

It doesn't take much thought to figure out WHY it's pointless.
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

First, you compare slamming on your brakes to an automobile accident, and then you say that if the dashboard is comming towards you, the firewall isn't doing its job?

Are you seriously this stupid?

There is a several hundred pound mass of metal sitting in the front of your car. There is no automobile firewall on the planet that is going to prevent the engine from sitting in your lap after a head on collision.

Pull your head out of your ass.

Airbags are designed to prevent severe whiplash or neck/spine injuries in the event of a collision. Trust me, when one hits you in the face you won't even know it happened. They inflate and deflate in the blink of an eye.

Would you like to argue the point with one of my patients that had an airbag save her life? The driver in the other vehicle, and a passenger, were both killed on impact. This is a letter I got from her family a year after that call:

It was one year ago that PATIENT was involved in a horrendous car carash when she was hit head-on by a drunk driver. When you look at the picture of PATIENT's car, it is hard to imagine that anyone survived, let alon progress as well as she has. PATIENT's injuries were a broken neck, a broken shoulder, broken left wrist, a lacerated liver, and her right leg was broken in several places including a compound fracture above her ankle and her knee cap and ankle were crushed.

For several days the doctors did not know if PATIENT would survive. PATIENT spent three weeks in U.M.C. Trauma Intensive Care, six weeks in HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, two months on home health care, and a total of five months in outpatient physical therapy. Now, one year later, PATIENT is back in school full time, and she celebreated spring break by taking a trip to San Diego.
We feel it was the grace of God that allowed the paramedics to be so close by, and they responded woth the proper care that allowed PATIENT to be romoved from the car without any further injury. We were blessed with skillful doctors and nurses that took such excellent care of PATIENT.

After a year of recovery PATIENT is still working hard to get stronger every day. After seven surgeries, PATIENT has metal throughout her body. PATIENT's neck was fused and she has a metal plate atteching her sping to the base of her skull, her wrist has a pin holding a bone graft together, a metal rod was inserted in her femur, a metal wire surrounds her knee cap, and a metal plate and screws is attached to fuse her rught ankle. PATIENT has lost half of the movement in her neck, walks with a limp, and has trouble walking long distances, and suffers from ached and pains that will be with her from now on. PATIENT's personality has not changed since the crash, and she has a positive outlook on her future and a wonderful smile that can light up a room.

Words alone will never be able to express how thankful we are for everyone that has helped us through this. Every one of you played an important part in PATIENT's recovery and have allowed our family to come out of this with our sanity intact. We will never be ale to repay you for all the things you have done for us. You each hold a special place in our hearts and your kindess and thoughtfulness will be remembered forever.

(Name was replaced for privacy.)

P.S. I REALLY hope this question is a joke.

They were designed by Children's hospitals. They have to justify their existance, so they designed a product that will cause more children to be hospitalized.*

Yet another thread to make me question whether Philippine Mango is an idiot or just pretends to be one.

If he's pretending, he's doing a pretty good job! I can't believe there are people (who have electricity to their homes) who have never seen a slow motion crash with a crash test dummy wearing a seatbelt and still impacting the airbag with their head.

Furthermore, as hasn't been pointed out yet by the people explaining some of the physics, the head/airbag collision is quite an inelastic collision, thus your head doesn't bounce back (which means an even greater change in momentum for your cranium)

They are also used to reduce the impulse you feel, if you can increase the time of collision you can increase your chance of walking away.
