I hope you were not serious and even if you were not, it was a joke in poor taste.

Oh cmon! Did anyone else find that funny?

No

Even the tiny island nation of Taiwan won 2 golds, (I heard that's their first gold ever... and they won two).

Yeah I watched the women's 4x400 relay the other day, and the Indian girls came in 1 better than dead last. The funny thing is all the women competing were tall, slender, athletic, almost 0 body fat, but the Indian women were built like my mom

No money. It's as simple as that.

There's not proper funding for them to give them the apprpriate training. Also those damn doping charges.

There's one american indian in the US gymnast team tho right? She barely got in, but ended up doing well.

but hey, India has a promising race driver now, he's done well in F3 and is doing well in the Formula Nissan series in Europe...so yay.

The bigger question is why does Canada suck in hte Olympics, and why don't they fund their atheletes. You know some of the Canadian Olympic athlethes had to pay for their own flight there? They didn't get sponsored at all. It's sad really, the Canadian public harps on them for not doing well, but if they never supported them what right to they have to critize them?

Indians are so fanatical about cricket that just about every other sport in India is ignored. There was a time when India was virtually undefeatable in field hockey, but when the world moved to Astro-turf, India was left behind. Sports is more than just fitness. It requires a certain level of discipline and mind-set to even compete. Indians lack that severely. Sports is also not very lucrative in India (except for Cricket). If the sportsmen lack discipline and mental toughness, the sports authorities are extremely corrupt and short-sighted, while the coaches are too selfish and use archaic methods to train. Kids with the means and opportunity to do well in sports typically come from families that identify education as the top-most priority. If somebody is not inculcated with the passion of sport at the age of 10, it is extremely unlikely that they will develop it later on in life.

Thats not really true...

its just that by the time they are done with college, even if they are a great athlete... their parents pressure them into "building a real career"

Doctor, lawyers and engineers are the only "real career"... hahaha

P.S. I am a software engineer, and my brother is in med school... LOL

This thread got me curious, so I ran a few numbers on the Top 5 medal counties:

1. US: 293 million people/103 medals = 1 per 2.9 million people
2. Russia: 144 million people/92 medals = 1 per 1.6 million people
3. China: 1.3 billion people/63 medals = 1 per 20.6 million people
4. Australia: 20 million people/49 medals = 1 per 408,000 people
5. Germany: 82 million people/48 medals = 1 per 1.7 million people
...
India: 1.07 billion people/1 medal = 1 per 1.07 billion people
