If you were going to put together the dream system from scratch what would that be? Just looking for ideas from those who know in case I may come into money some day. I am talking the MAX here mother board, CPU, RAM, Drives, Video, Sound, Speakers, ETC In other words the works. The best of the Best!!!!!

Why get a P4 1.8 when you can go for a 2.0?

If money was absolutely no object at all... why not go for a server system the has like 6 pentium processors and more memory that you can chew... not sure what the specs would be... but you can break the 10,000 dollar mark easily on an extremely high end server system.

Motherboard: Tiger MP
CPUs: 2 x Athlon MP 2000+ (soon to be available)
RAM: 3 x 1 GB Corsair Registered DDR DIMM
Video: GeForce3 Ti500

Toss in a 64-bit PCI SCSI RAID card + four X15's in a RAID5 array, an Intel NIC, Audigy sound card, & the usual assortment of CDRW/DVD/etc.

vipergts: you stole my reply. that is almost identical to what i would say. dual 2000+'s would be sweet. probably add a server case along with water cooling. dont know which monitor i would choose. probably a 21 or 23 inch lcd.

I'll be getting this next fall and will need lots of your help setting it up:

8 dual 2.5 GHz Xeons
768 MB RDRAM on seven, 2 GB RDRAM on the last
40 GB IDE on seven, quad 73 GB SCSI on the last
cheapest video card on seven, Wildcat II 5110 on the last
fastest ethernet hookup between them
8 computer (2 user) KVM
22" Cornerstone P1750 (for dual monitor use with my P1600)
integrated sound on all (no speakers)

Basically I'm looking at 7x$3000 (1st seven computers) + $7500 (last computer)+ $700 (monitor) + $800 (KVM) = $30,000 total.

Nothing is set in stone yet. Of course I could save a little bit by converting my current dual 1.7 GHz into one of those computers.

Edit: If Intel releases their quad Xeon server before then, that would simplify my purchase a lot.

My "dream" system is the ship's computer from Star Trek's Voyager.

EDIT: My more realistic dream system I will build next year . . . either a Northwood 533FSB system or a Thoroughbred system.

Dual Athlons - the highest speed that works in SMP
1 gig or 2 of PC2400 DDR
GeForce3 Ti500
a couple 15K RPM U160 drives, 36 GB Seagates
nice soundcard... nothing like SUPER MAJOR high end worth millions... what would this thing not do anyways? it would rule most of south-western Ontario PC's anyways... ahh how sweet it would be...

RAM - 1GB PC2100 DDR

Video Card - ATI 8500DV

Soundcard - M-Audio, Audiophile 2496 - I don't care about multichannel and 3D I want QUALITY 2 channel

If I had billions of dollars I would probably buy something similar to the following for my desktop. It is really easy to spend millions of dollars on a computer with solid state drives, multi million dollar A/V setups, SGI's, Suns, etc...

2x 2.0Ghz P4 Xeon processors $1500
1x Supermicro P4DC6+ $625
1x Some type of big cube like case with plenty of power supply. Painted Dakar Yellow. $1200
1x Viewsonic p225f 22" monitor $800
4x mushkin 256MB 800Mhz ECC RDRAM $ 636 (4x512mb would cost nearly 2k dollars)
2x Seagate Cheetah X15-36LP 36GB drives $1070
2x WD 100GB SE drives $540
1x Digital Audio Labs CardDeluxe Sound Card $400
1x Hercules 3d Prophet III GeForce 3 Ti 500 $340
1x Pioneer 305S SCSI Slot feed DVD Drive $100
1x Sanyo BP5 24x SCSI burner $189
1x Netgear GA622T Gigabit ethernet NIC $120
1x Netgear GS516T 10/100/1000 copper Gigabit switch. $1300
1x Krell KAV-300i Integrated Amplifier $1500
1Pair Martin Logan Aeon ESL's. $2000
1x Sennheiser hd600 headphones $350
1x IBM keyboard w/ big backspace key and "\" key located above the "enter" key. $30
1x MS intellimouse Explorer 3.0 $40
1x Herman Miller Aeron Chair $700

Total: $13,441.00 + Tax/Shipping. Knock off about 1500 if AMD processors/mobos are desired.
Add about $1000 for a scsi raid controller. The Krell integrated amp and the ESL's are a little much, but they are entry level HiFi.
I dont think the big Suns, Silicon Graphics etc type computers would have much entertainment value.
