Tried Carcassonne (another one generally chalked up with "Settlers" as 'really great games') but...meh, was unimpressed.
Carcassonne is fun for a little while, but the lustre wears off quickly. I'm not sure why it consistently gets mentioned alongside Settlers.

Castle Risk ( i can play risk, but i prefer castle risk)
I had friends who loved Castle Risk, but it drives me nuts to play it. Fortification was supposed to be the most fundamental tactic in Risk and Castle Risk provides too many overrides for that what with the capitals and the admirals and such. Bleh.
The first time I played I was in England and I was plowing across Europe with a very heavily fortified front line, but I only left a token force on the capital because I didn't know there was a card that allowed you to attack by sea. I was prepared in later games, but the concept that this can happen in a game called "Risk" just bothers me. Amusingly, if the game was called something else, I probably would never have cared since I would have never compared it directly to Risk.
