Hi,

I just thought about asking this general question. What do you like about your favorite operating system?

Thanks for the input

Windows, just because I'm so used to it that I can't use anything else. Tried... but I got tired of trying and fell back to the dark side. That, and I'm a gamer.

win2K just because it has all the advantages of the NT kernel without the disadvantages (NT4) or bloat (XP)

Linux. It's fast, it's stable, it's simple, and it supports any hardware that's worth having.

My only grievance with it is that it's printing abilities are sub-par to say the least. My HP DeskJet 660C printer works, but I have numerous problems, such as text getting cut off, colors that are completely wrong, and the fact that sometimes it will just dump raw postscript instead of printing a formatted document. For these reasons, I use Windows NT 4.0 in VMware for printing.

XP, because it has all the advantages of 2k, but it boots and shuts down faster. Not that I ever reboot. I didn't choose linux because most of the time, I want stuff to "just work". I would probably have chosen Mac OS if it ran on modern, lower-cost hardware.

Depends what I'm doing. Windows for most desktop use...linux for a few things there (general web browsing, etc...), linux on the server side.

Mac OS X is the best desktop OS ever. OpenBSD for most servers, although linux or FreeBSD would be ok on some. BeOS was pretty good too.

It all depends on what application I'm running.

I prefer Debian because of it tight/fast kernel with high security & stability. Debain is the best server side I have worked with even better than SCO & Solaris.

The best for network is Netware NDS. If Linux copy the tree method from NDS for administration, drag & drop printer/file sharing then MS & Unix wouldn?t have a hope in hell.

The best was MS OS was DOS/Win3.0 for its simplicity.

Some defunct OS that worth mentioning that I have experience with was OS2 & Amiga, and the elegant Canadian QNX.

As for the ultimate OS is one that have as much application support as MS Windows Combine with Netware logic and Linux/Unix security + the powerful core of QNX. (Wish list for X-mass 2002)

Depends. For general use I tend to use Windows. The GUI system is faster and for web browsing and typing papers I can just get more work done in Windows. For more server/automated tasks though, I strongly prefer Linux. My Linux machine sits queitly beside my Windows machine and though he doesn't get as much "screen time", I ssh into it from all around campus to check my email w/ mutt, it now emails me every morning if it finds things on ebay that I configured, it does bid sniping, serves as a bnetd server, and will do Divx compression if I ever take the time out do set it up (and will do any other cool things in the background that I feel like setting up. I reall should setup SETI or RC5 on it just to do something at least quasi-useful with the extra cycles). I also do a decent amount of my coding on my Linux box (I used to do all my coding on it, but I've been using Borland C++ Builder recently to do some windows apps and on the GUI side it just works better for me though. command line programming stuff Linux still gets all the action).

I like XP and win2k both just fine. It's just that I prefer XP because I can hook-up my digital camera. Then able to access my photo's without using the software that comes with the camera. Simple stuff like that is why I use XP.

The way the question was asked what is my favorite, I will definitely say BeOS 5 Pro, go here and see a little sample of why I like it so much.

BeOS movie

I have posted this a few times before and IMO it just goes to show how good this old outdated OS on outdated HW really is, and before I get replies back about Be being dead and not comapatible and all that remember the question was what is your favorite OS. In saying all that I do use and run other OSes too, XP Pro, Mac OS and SuSe 8, they all have their place.

Gentoo linux for me. Once I figured out the basics, I just felt to confined in Windows world so I deleted WinXP off my sytem completely. Going cold turkey was hard at first, but I've gotten the hang of it now, and the only place I use Windows is at work.

I do like the look of OSX, and I have tried FreeBSD, but Gentoo just really works for me.

Windows XP SP1. Boots up extremely fast, games play very well, and I do like the luna GUI. XP has all of the stability of 2000, and all of the game/drivers support of '98.

I concur with that. Windows 2000 works best for me, since I do a lot of photo editing (sorry, but GIMP just doesn't cut it), and getting high quality printing on Linux is a total PITA (I've never been able to get it to work, despite lots of effort on my part, with my Epson SC880). However, Linux is absolutely wonderful for programming, running all kinds of services, and it excels at pretty much everything else except gaming and printing.

For desktop use, Gentoo, Debian is very nice as well, but too outdated for my taste.

For servers, Im torn between Linux, Solaris and OpenBSD, they all have their advantages.

For gaming, Win2K, not so much cause I like, but rather cause Im stuck with it until I outgrow the whole gaming thing...
