Never understood this argument. Domain takes longer to setup, cost money, and did I mention not free? I think most people interested in Gmail want a fast, reliable email system that isn't bogged down with SPAM and storage issues. For those people, the best bet is Gmail. Google is on to something, to create this much stir about a product. But, for those who don't want it, don't get it and stop knocking it.
