Where are the price cuts?

As I see it the GTX680 is worth more than the 7970. The 680 wins more times than it looses to the 7970. Given that, where is the AMD price cut?

I'm not in the market for either of these cards, I buy midrange ($250-$300). I'm hoping a 7970 price cut will trickle down to a 7870 price cut and put it at $300.

Of course maybe I'm not seeing things correctly. Is the 680 better than the 7970? I understand it depends on what each person thinks is more important.

Simple supply and demand. There's currently not enough GTX 680s around right now for everyone to be able to purchase them. They are sold out everywhere, with the ones on ebay going for over $600. If someone is in the market for one right now, they are pretty much stuck paying a premium for the GTX680s or purchasing a readily available 7970.

Wait a month or two for supply to catch up, and you'll start seeing price drops on the 7970. You'll probably have to wait even longer for the 7870 to slowly decline in price.

Good luck with that. A 7970 is not gonna almost halve its value just because a card came out that beats it by 15% (?). The most I see it being reduced is $100 to $450, but only if there are no supply constraints from either side.

EDIT: Sorry you meant a 7870 going down to $300. I didn't read it carefully enough.

He meant that he hopes a 7970 price cut will result in cutting the price of the 7870 to $300 (i.e. a $50-60 price cut). I'm right there with him

I think that the price cut for AMD product will arrive roughly around the time that the custom PCB nVidia 680 cards become available and product stock levels are not an issue.

I honestly don't think we'll see reduced pricing until comparable Nvidia cards are widely available. Widely available 680s are one thing. Direct competition is another, IMHO.

I'm with you! I got about 18 more days to collect on my price protection!

I hope AMd price cuts before then!

There is not going to be anything similar to the 7870. Little kepler is going to replace the 550ti.

What I want to know is when is the rest of the 6xx family going to be released? I thought about waiting until prices drop on the 5xx series cards, but then I remembered that they really won't.

My GTX470 has gotten long in the tooth at 19x12. I've got a new P67-based/i2500K rig that's waiting to be built...need a better GPU than what I've got.

Same here, I'd like to see 7870 in the $300-$320 range.
I saw 7950 for $400 and some 7870 for $334, but these are some special short-term deals, I'm still hoping for some across the board cuts.

Nobody knows how long mid range cards from Kepler may take. It may take 1.5 months, it may be 3 months, it may be even longer if you get unlucky.

There is no point waiting 2-3 months without a decent card. The nvidia card won't be cheaper, at a given price point it will be about the same performance take or give 5-10% at most. Don't expect something better than the 7870 at $250. At most you will get 7870 class performance for $300+- and I would rather pay $50 premium for 3 months of leisure and gaming time.

Waiting for something which isn't announced yet is stupid.

It is like you have a Nokia E series phone, and you don't wanna buy Galaxy S2/Iphone 4S just because Iphone 5/Galaxy S3 may arrive in June-August but is still not guaranteed.

IMO $50 is less than half of what you must be spending on outings in a week, a $50 premium is justified if it means getting the performance 2-3 months earlier, perhaps even 4 months earlier.

Well, I think this is a matter of opinion, and it depends on one's situation. Personally, I usually upgrade my gpu every 3-4 years. Because of that, waiting 3-6 months is a drop in the bucket compared to the 3-4 years that I'll have the card. For people who upgrade every 18-24 months, then waiting 3-6 months might seem like forever.

I also have a 4870, so I can certainly game on that while I'm waiting to upgrade it. If I had just built a system and only had integrated graphics, then waiting 3-6 months would be torture.

Also, as shown by the recent GTX 680 review, nvidia made no advanced announcements and did a (slightly) hard launch. So, in 1-2 months we could have a hard launch of a product at 7870 performance for $300 or less. Hopefully there will be plenty of leaks like there were for the 680, so we're not completely in the dark about it.

Waiting is an easy decision for me because I won't have the money until July

For people that upgrade every 12-18 months this is the worst year of GPU releases.

Even if 660Ti or whatever it will be called comes in April, i believe it will have the same price as 7800 series. I suspect, we'll not see any price wars for the next 3 months.

I'm hoping to upgrade from my GTX470 in the near future since I've had the parts for a new system (MB/CPU/RAM) for months now...just sitting there. My PC is a rackmount, so it's a PITA to get in there to change things out. I'd rather just have to take it all apart once and be done with it.

Two years ago when i bought my GTX470 I was very happy with my "not the top card but above the middle tier" card. I'm hoping that the "GTX670" or whatever "the card at that level" is called, is released in the next couple of months. $350 would be nice, and I'd pay that assuming the performance was there.

I think a better question would be. Is there even a game worthy of such an expensive card.

Waiting for that graphics leap we experienced with Crysis.....I don't see it.

Well, with Crysis, we still haven't broken the magic 60FPS barrier with most cards in hi-res/hi-detail situations. There's also Mass Effect 3 which is supposed to be pretty brutal on GPUs, though I don't follow the GPU Stories as much as I used to.

Sadly, that is not the case. My girlfriend gets pretty good performance with her Phenom II X4 945 and Radeon 4670. Yet another DX9 console port. At least it does run efficiently on PC.

Company don't cut prince until they have to, until they see their product piling up in the warehouse.

I think that the people who are waiting for the 7xxx prices to fall are going to be 1) waiting very long and 2) very disappointed at what the prices will level off at.

The days of (relatively) cheap high end video cards are gone... and they are never coming back.
