We commonly use plumbing (water) analogies with electrical primarily when explaining pressure (voltage) and flow (current), conductor size (pipe diameter). One difference though - when a pipe breaks all the water squirts out. When a wire breaks the flow simply stops. Now if we could only make plumbing do that!

On the other hand, water doesn't spontaneously leap through the air and drench me when I walk too close to a pipe.

Wow wherever you work sounds really dangerous!
Standard 120/240V service never does that.
Higher potentials that could in fact do this should be very well guarded to prevent one from coming close enough for that leap to occur.

...careful...

Nikola might hear you...

and he knew things (circa 1800s) that are

still classified TOP SECRET in 2012

so....

careful....

(this society still has NO FRIGGIN' CLUE what a surppasingly stupendious G E N I U S Nikola was...we are taught to celebrate Einstein instead...Albert couldn't tie Nikola's shoes-Nikola Tesla was somethging so extraordinary he ranks with, or above, Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, ANYBODY---this material world was NOT able to comprehend the gift God gave in Nikola Tesla- radio, x-ray, electric motors, etc. my God!)

Yep it pisses me off to know that the government knows of something that they don't want others to know because it could "threaten the oil industry". It's BS, pure BS. Knowledge is power and should be free for everyone. I feel the same way with patents, copyright and all that BS. If there's a piece of knowledge or a work, it should be free to use by anyone for anything. THAT is how innovations are made, this is how society is made better, not by restricting everything.

The reason copyrights exist is to give people financial incentive to invent things your frickin commie.

Then it creates monopoly, so nobody else can have a chance at making something to compete. They were still the first to come up with it, that should be a reward on it's own. It's not like another company is suddenly going to beat them out of the blue, the inventor company still gets a head start.

On the other hand, if a small group/person comes up with an idea, they don't have much chance at commercializing it since a bigger company is just going to eat it up by patenting it before the inventor has the money to do it. Patents/copyright only benefit large corporations.

So...is this book for real, or is it a joke, like Christwire.org?
If this is real, that's why sites like Christwire.org are often mistaken for the real thing. Good old Poe's Law at work.

That part of the matrix movies I thought totally off the charts stupid.
Yeah, especially when they added the "combined with a form of fusion" part.

So they've got "a form" of fusion, whatever the hell that's supposed to mean (either it's fusion, or it's not). They can tap right into the immense power of nuclear reactions, but they still think it's worthwhile to go to all the trouble of providing raw base materials to allow humans to be bred, and the immense trouble of not only keeping their bodies alive in an environment that's become even more hostile to their continued existence, but also of developing a neural interface that allows their little chemical battery packs to participate in an interactive alternate reality that's run inside an exceedingly complex computer.

I guess it's possible that the Matrix machines were originally designed by accident by a pack of misanthropic chimps that broke into a bar late one night.

Yeah, especially when they added the "combined with a form of fusion" part.

This conversation totally makes up for that ....

Councillor Harmann: Down here, sometimes I think about all those people still plugged into the Matrix and when I look at these machines I... I can't help thinking that in a way... we are plugged into them.
Neo: But we control these machines; they don't control us.
Councillor Harmann: Of course not. How could they? The idea is pure nonsense. But... it does make one wonder... just... what is control?
Neo: If we wanted, we could shut these machines down.
Councillor Harmann: [Of] course. That's it. You hit it. That's control, isn't it? If we wanted we could smash them to bits. Although, if we did, we'd have to consider what would happen to our lights, our heat, our air...
Neo: So we need machines and they need us, is that your point, Councilor?
Councillor Harmann: No. No point. Old men like me don't bother with making points. There's no point.
Neo: Is that why there are no young men on the council?
Councillor Harmann: Good point.

Neo: I just haven't been able to sleep much.
Councillor Harmann: It's a good sign.
Neo: Of what?
Councillor Harmann: That you are, in fact, still human.

Councillor Harmann: I like to be reminded this city survives because of these machines. These machines keep us alive, while other machines are coming to kill us. Interesting, isn't it? The power to give life, and the power to end it.

Councillor Hamann: That's how it is with people - nobody cares how it works as long as it works.

So true. I think many are unaware of this massive symbiotic relationship we now have with technology, and that it's happened so fast relative to the life span of human civilization. I wonder if there's going to be a point in time when we rely on technology more than it relies on us, if that's possible.

And what would happen if the electricity did go out? Dr. Pizza brought up a good point,
I'm amazed that people are laughing about that 4th grade textbook's blurb about electricity, yet without googling, most of you also wouldn't be able to define electricity.

forgot about define... how many of us know how to produce electricity.

Everyone knows that electricity comes from the electric company, mine is called Reliant Energy. Duh. If I don't pay my bill, no electricity.

Yeah...that's pretty much the opposite of how the patent system works. If a small group/person comes up with an idea and patents it, they now have a chance to commercialize or sell their idea WITHOUT the bigger company reverse-engineering it and beating them to market. Filing a patent really doesn't cost that much money, and it actually makes your ideas WORTH something. Without patents, we'd all just be stealing each others' ideas as soon as they came up with them (reverse-engineering is MUCH easier than innovation), which would mean that the only people coming up with ideas would be doing it out of pure altruism.

I agree that the period of patent and copyright protection is an important factor that can be debated, but arguing against patents entirely shows a degree of hopeless naiveté about real life.

They should have tried to explain it some other way. Like: The machines are using every part of the human brain that's normally dormant, so the minds function at 100% all the time. The collective intelligence of machine is far greater than it could be with a purely-electronic brain. It would also enable the processing necessary for a simulated reality as detailed as the Matrix.

Electricity comes from the rich, or as we call them the "job creators". The figured out that in order to make jobs they needed something to power the machines that would make jobs so they discovered, invented, harnessed and produced electricity.

Everyone knows this.

Do you know any "job creators"?
