Im surely getting a 20+" LCD monitor (so all those "get a 19" instead" messages arent really welcomed...edit: neither are comments about getting a CRT)...

Which one should I get?

Ive looked into getting the Samsung Syncmaster 21.3", and the Viewsonic VX2000 20"...it was interesting, when i called microcenter about it, they said that they were replacing their VX2000 with new models, but they didnt say which one.

Compusa has the best deals on both, outside of buying online of course...with $100 rebates on each.

PA Tax = 6% mind i note...
So the VX2000 would come to $1105.54 after tax (and free shipping...not available in store)
The Syncmaster would come to $1377.97 after tax (and free shipping)

The $100 rebate on the VX200 applies only to BB, OD, C-USA, MC, and PC Richard and Son (CompUSA's site doesnt list it, but if you goto microcenter's site and get the rebate PDF, it lists those stores at which its valid).
The $100 rebate on the Syncmaster is available at both CompUSA and BB (only 2 of the big 7 stores that sell it...the other 5 being staples, OM, CC, MC and OD)...BB has it at same price as CUSA...id rather give my money to CUSA as opposed to BB.

I mention about purchasing in stores because the before rebate cost, including tax, is being covered by someone else, of which they have no idea there is a rebate on. So its a free monitor + $100.

I didnt see any other 20 inch monitors with rebates...max price range is $1400.

Well, I have no direct expeience with either LCD you've listed. My 17" Viewsonic VP171B works great, no problems what so ever. Id wait it out a bit and see what model they replace it with (the VX2000).

Im going to go ahead and recommend the viewsonic because it will save you some coin and because they seem to have some good quality products. However you may want to do a search around and see if any reviews are available for either one. Just taking a quick look around on various websites, most users seem to be happy with it. (33 out of 35 to be exact. cons: price)

At one point I always thought it was crazy to buy an lcd...so expensive, so not worth it. Now that I have my VP171B...I will never go back to a CRT and cringe when I use my crt's on my other two computers. There is a HUGE difference between crts and lcds, especially at the size you are looking at.

Only reason i would get an LCD would be if i was going to college, not anytime soon tho, since i'm 15, but i would probably not have room for like 2 feet more on desk, so thats when i'll get LCD.

All things being equal, I'd go for the Samsung and the larger display area. What you're likely trading off there is a bit of pixel pitch as the Samsung is creeping up there. I am assuming this is the Samsung you're talking about or the black model.

This is one of the monitors I am considering too with my next upgrade. The Viewsonic model is likely built to TCO-95 emissions standards and the Samsung is TCO-99.

Yeah its that one...the 213T...

black or gray...no big deal...the B&M stores carry gray; BB and CompUSA.

What is TCO95/99?

I would seriously buy this from a retail out and ask them about their dead pixel policy. I woulnt want to spend $1300+ and find ANY dead pixel anyplace on my moniter.

What is TCO95/99?
TCO95/99 are radition emissions standards. The newer standards are lower and are therefore better. Older designs follow less strict manufacturing processes and are more cheaply built.

I would go with the Samsung model between the two, make sure you use it in DVI mode if possible.

I don't know if its easy to find Philips monitor in US. But if you could find them, 200P3 series is a great choice!

It has 4 signal sources you can choose. DVI, D-Sub, S-Video and Composit. One more great feature is the PIP function. With a tuner, you could watch TV while working on your applications. It's hardware, so won't take out your system resources.

It's very popular in EU and A/P.

I have a Samsung 213T. It's an incredible monitor. Takes up a fraction of the foorprint of my old 21inch Hitachi (gave that to my son). Plays games extremely well. I have not noticed any ghosting.

Definetly go with the Dell 2001fp when it comes out in about a month. It's 20 inches, 1600x1200 resolution, and 16 ms response time. It will probobly be around $900.

i am using the DELL 2000FP and i swear by it!!! it is a slightly large bezel but i got in on a good deal so i dont care because this thing has NO ghosting and no dead pixels and is razor sharp at 1600x1200 DVI.... just my 2 cents...

how are the LCD's when it comes to switching resolution? are they like your standard CRT, where the picture takes up the full screen; or does the picture just take up lets say 1024x768 and leave a black border around the outside of the picture?
