IBM 40 DESKSTAR 7200
-40.9 Maxtor 7200
-40.0 Western Digital 7200
-Seagate Barracuda 40 Go

Which one should I choose?

I heard that the IBM Deskstar has some difficulties to run during more than 8 hours. A lot of people recommend me the Maxtor. What do you think? Thanks to anybody who will help me.

Just two days ago I picked up a Seagate Barracuda IV 40 GB, and I must say that it's the quietest and most reliable drive I've ever used in my life.

But with these such things, there's always a catch The Seagate drive runs EXTREMELY hot, so if you're willing to live with another one or two degrees in your case temp, then I'd go for the Seagate.

You bought it two days ago and it's already the most reliable drive you've ever purchased?!
Remind me never to purchase the same drives as you've been buying...

IBM would be the fastest option, but reliability is seriously questionable.
Maxtor is an excellent price/performance offering. Pretty quiet and good performance.
The Western Digital WD400BB performs respectably, and noise levels are average.
Seagate Barracuda IV is the quitest of the drives listed, but also the slowest.

Personally I'd lean towards Maxtor unless your very concerned with noise levels in which case Seagate would be a better option.

Just curious...How can you make a statement like that if you picked up the drive only two days ago?

First off, scratch IBM from consideration. They suck goat balls.

If you want a solid, reliable drive that is virtually silent (albeit not as high performing) grab the Barracuda IV. I've had the pleasure of using and installing several IV series and they're great. Sometimes I have to stop and examine the drive just to make sure it is actually running

Maxtor's D740X is a great choice as well. It has the speediest seek times (for IDE) and will walk over the Barracuda IV performance wise. But even the fluid bearing D740X are noisier than the Barracuda IV's. The other plus with Maxtor is their support and return policies -- unquestionably the best in the industry. And the prices are right too.
