which beer should I get?

First of all I'm not a beer connoisseur. I know some of you hate any American beer, or any beer not from a microbrewery, or whatever, but I'm limited to what I can find at my local grocery store. I'm not that picky. No light beer or Budweiser-ish, that's the extent of my requirements.

I've enjoyed Newcastle and Warsteiner in the past, but I'm open to whatever.

Do you have any stores that sell micro brews in single cans? This would be a great way to see what kind of microbrews you like and dont like. Me? I am an IPA person. So I would for sure suggest you try an IPA from a Pacific Northwest brewery.

horrible advice. life's too short for crappy beer.

Your short list should include anything from Pyramid, Bridgeport, Widmer, Full Sail, or Rogue. These are all northwest breweries, but I imagine you could find them anywhere if you do a little looking. If you can't then you could always get something from Henry's as they have a wider distribution. Just stay away from their hefeweizen, as I found it too be quite disgusting (although I might just be spoiled on Widmer).

Edit: My favorites-

Widmer Hefeweizen
Bridgeport Blue Heron Pale
Pyramid Summer Ale (for something lighter)
Full Sail Pale
Full Sail IPA (very hoppy and yummy!)

What state are you in? Distribution is very regional.

For "safe" bets, check into something like a Edinger wheat or Boulevard Wheat. Slap a slice a lemon in there and enjoy.

Others to consider are Fat Tire, Dundee's Honey Brown, and Leinies Hony Weiss.

All of those are easy to drink, summer friendly brews.

Man, a lot of strong opinions. Cheap beer really just doesn't offend me. I appreciate the different flavors and complexities of higher end brews, but if I'm sitting outside all day and probably getting drunk with a bunch of people, there's nothing at all wrong with a few cases of bud light or similar.

OP, get a case of the suggestions here for you and your guests, then a few more of bud light for when none of you can tell/care about the difference.
