I have just gotten roadrunner cable and I want to share it between my xp machine, my sister's 98 and a sun sparcstation. I am looking at getting a Dlink 704p ($40 at officemax). Is Dlink cheap junk or high quality, I don't mind spending more for less headaches if there is something else that would fit my needs better.

One question about the Dlink: so many routers say support for 253 comps or something ridicules like that, but the 704P does not say anything about how many it supports, I would hope it would be more than just the four ports.

The main differences between the Entry level Cable/DSL Routers is the number,
and range of ports that can be open through the Hardware Firewall.

If you are a gamer, and or use applications that need special ports opening, you need to log to the major manufactures sites, and look at the data sheets. Or look over the reviews here:

Otherwise the best Entry Level Cable/DSL Router is the cheapest one of the "Does Not Matter" Brand.

Take a look at your local - CompUSA, Best Buy, Circuit City etc. dealer most of the time they have something in this category bellow $50 (A/R).

The following statement was found on a seller Internet page page:

The DI-704P's Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) feature provides dynamic allocation of IP addresses for up to 253 clients (computers) on the local network.

BTW, the 253 number is usually the numbers of computers that DHCP can assign too. In any case if you have more then 20 computers, I doubt that you want to use Entry Level hardware.
