Which would take better closeup shots? Like if I'm trying to capture as much detail as possible on a small object.

then get a camera that can use lenses and then get a macro lense

but usualy a good quality 3.2mp camera is alot better than a cheap 4mp camera

Gotchya... but of the two options I gave, which would provide a more detailed picture? The extra zoom or the extra MP? Assuming both are quality cameras.

the lense is the most important parts of a digital camera I say

and if you can put a third party lense on it then all the better

What are you calling close up? Like inches away? If so, get a camera with good macro capability.

Well I have an Olympus C-3020 that's 3.2 MP with 3X optical zoom... the macro mode is decent, it works from about 6-12 inchs from something, but sometimes I'd like to get in even tighter.

I was looking at the Olympus C-740 which is 3.2 MP with 10X optical zoom.

Then I was looking at the Canon PowerShot S1 IS which is also 3.2 MP and 10X optical zoom, but MUCH more expensive.

And then there's the Kodak DX6440 with 4 MP and 4X optical zoom... but I'm not too crazy about Kodak cameras. I've played with a couple at Best Buy and they just felt more like a toy for some reason.

I like the 10X optical zoom cause sometimes if I'm taking a picture of something far away I can't zoom in tight enough with the camera I have right now. For example, I wanted to get a picture of Air Force One landing at Detroit when Bush visited the area once... but for security reasons I obviously couldn't get REAL close to the airport... and while I could see it pretty well, the camera couldn't capture it very well.

I've also been looking to get a different camera because my Olympus tends to be on the grainy side... I use Helicon Noise Filter to clean them up a bit, but if I have to get real agressive to get rid of grainy skies or something it blurs details. Hmmmm... maybe if I use a higher quality jpeg compression on the camera... I think I'm already at the highest though... without going to an uncompressed format.

3MP is still plenty for most people. I'd go for the extra zoom, although 4x still isn't much. . .

Jeff,

1st, do not have one, only held one... So, just going off of comments I have read...

Look that the Fuji S3000 and S5000. 3MP and 6X or 10X optical zoom. Macro to about 4 inches. Newegg is bo at the moment, but about $230 and $340. Feels like an SLR.

I have a Nikon n6000 (35mm), so I have been eyeing a S5000 as a slight substitute until I give up on the video thing I have gotten into (yeah right, with HD cameras about 6 months away - like I will not want to mess with that first... )

one thing you can look out for as far as grainyness goes is the simulated film speed (iso). the idea behind iso is that as the number goes higher, you have more light (and therefore faster shutter speeds) but more grain as well. the goal is to take pictures with the lowest iso possible, but sometimes you take the tradeoff of grain because it's better than a blurry picture that comes from handholding/slow shutter speed in low light conditions

it may be that the camera is just poor with grain but it's something worth looking at

as far as which camera is better, i'd say always go with the one with the better zoom unless the image quality is unacceptable or the resolution is under 2mp (which i don't think exists today). i'm going to give you the same advice i gave someone else in another thread:

i'd go with the most zoom possible, as extra reach is always a valuable thing. i've printed 8x10's with a 2.1mp camera that came out very good and i'm extremely picky about image quality. the real advantage of having tons of resolution is so you can crop. in this situation, i don't think you'd need it as there's not too much you can't frame correctly with a 10x zoom. the way i see it, if you can't make great pictures with a camera that flexible without cropping, it's the operator that needs improvement.

if you do decide you'd like to have more resolution and a great zoom, there is always the olympus ultra zoom series (as you mentioned). far as i know, they don't have IS which is a shame because it really is good technology. olympus' original ultra zoom (the c-2100) had IS and that was an excellent camera (i owned it).

definitely more zoom. Only benefit of 3.2 and 4 is probably printing 8.5x11's

I usually have my camera set to ISO 100 (as low as it'll go) but I noticed some other ones go all the way down to 50 and I think I've even seen 20.
