Still haven't decided. All the 18Vs worth a damn are super expensive, same with the 12V. I found a 20V that seems nice, but don't know if it's necessary to have 20V and if it's good or not. Seems nice and light weight, which is my primary concern (3.6 lb).

A guy I work with has one of these drills and it is surprisingly powerful for it's size and weight. I have used it with a 1-1/8" carbide cutter to make holes in metal studs and it worked great. Did go through the battery pretty quickly, but they charge fast too. Still won't have the power/weight ratio of the brushless tools, but also a very good price.

That 20V Dewalt also comes with 2 lithium batteries. The battery alone is close to the price of the tool.

It's a good drill.

I've had the 18v for years.
Just got that 20v for my birthday. Used it a couple of times and no complaints. Especially at that price.

For a homeowner just using it for projects around the house, I will always recommend Ryobi. It'll get the job done just fine. The battery will probably be the first thing to die on whatever drill you buy, and replacement batteries for expensive drills cost nearly as much as a Ryobi drill + battery.

Plus you can use the same battery with a bunch of other tools.

I had the worst luck with Ryobi cordless drills. The first one I bought had a chuck that couldn't hold a drill bit tight enough to keep it from slipping in the chuck when trying to drill into even the softest of woods. I replaced it with a better chuck but then the battery charger burned out and replacing it cost more than the drill itself. I threw it in the trash and bought a DeWalt 18V which I've had for about a decade now. It is getting to the point where the batteries don't hold a charge for very long so I'm thinking about replacing them but otherwise it has been perfect.

I'll never buy another Ryobi product EVER.

That's not a combo kit. That's one tool that's bad at everything. And you got one battery.

The copiously-recommended two-battery drill kits from Dewalt and possibly others, for about 75-100 bucks, are a ridiculously better deal.

It's like dragging out a PC build in the hardware forums for months, then saying 'THANKS GUYS I JUST PICKED UP A USED IMAC.'

I wouldn't say "crappier", they are two different tools really. That $225 one is capable for the needs of commercial jobbers. The $100 one is a very nice homeowner's drill.

If I was going into the $200+ market today, I'd look for brushless.

I'd like to point out that the 20v max name is just a marketing scheme, as the same exact drill in the UK is sold as 18v. That being said, these are still the best drills on the market today.

And to the derogatory nicad commenter, they might be heavier, but I've yet to see a Lion battery outlast one in charge cycles, and they don't hold a candle to nicads for extreme cold/hot performance. Best thing about the new Dewalt Lions is the availability of a whopping 4 amp/hr version.

Maybe you can find a nice combo kit that will give you some versatility. This one at Lowe's doesn't seem to be a bad price for a 3 piece kit.
