Which GeForce 4 TI 4x00 ?

Hello people

I am seriously considering moving from my ATI Radeon VE 32MB to a GOOD graphics card.

I tend to do some gaming, so I have been thinking of getting a GF 4 based TI 4200 with 128 MB, as that seems to be the most practical and economical choice, since I should be able to overclock it's performance.

Now, from what I have read, the ASUS 8240 (TI4200) 128MB 'DELUXE' version seems to be the one with best performance, but I have just checked its price on GoogleGear, and it's about $240

I have seen some TI 4400 in about that price range, and I think I saw on GoogleGear itself, some cheaper ones !

Can someone please point me in the right direction about which brand/combination would be ideal ?

I was ideally looking at a budget of about $160 or so.

If you don't need the added functionality from any "delux" or "all-in-wonder" version, you'd be better off saving your money.

If you can find one for a good price, the 4200 is a great card. How much do you want to spend?

yeah I'd stick with the cheapest GF4 Ti4200 128MB you can find. Leadtek, Visiontek (didnt they just go out of business), or MSI are all great and are usually a good price. ASUS' are always expensive, and their "deluxe" cards are often overpriced. You should be able to find a good one for ~160.

Newegg has the 'ALBATRON GeForce 4 TI4200P (NVIDIA GeForce4 TI4200 GPU), 128MB DDR, DVI+VGA TV-Out. w/DVI adaptor' for $154.00. The card is shown as having 400mhz memory. This is wrong. The card actually clocked at 500mhz on the memory. Most Ti 4200 128meg cards are clocked at 444mhz.

That's good news if the RAM is clocked at 500mhz by default as it would imply they use 3.6ns RAM which would mean GF4TI4600 speeds should be attainable! It is possible they use the same 4.0ns as 98% of all 4200-128MB but even so they all reach GF4TI4400 speeds so that's no bad thing either, you certainly wouldn't have to worry about getting a 4.5ns 4200 anyway!

With a P4 @ 2.4ghz the least you should settle for is a 4200-128MB and basicly get the cheapest one you can find as manu makes VERY little diff for GF4TI cards. The 'Asus 4200-128 Deluxe' and 'Suma 4200-128 Special Edition' use the longer 4400/4600 board design and 3.3ns BGA RAM, they come with higher standard clocks and o/c to between 300/640 and 300/700 from what I've read (4600=300/650). However they are about the same price as 4400 cards which will perf and o/c about as well and will get you more when the time comes to sell it on. IMHO get a 4200-128MB, the cheapest will do ... but I'd rec that Albatron if it is a 128MB 4200 coming with 250/500 stock as there's a very decent chance it has 3.6ns RAM.

If you've been using a RadVE (aka Rad7000) be prepared to get blown away by the diff, esp with 2xAA/QxAA and Aniso enabled! RadVE doesn't even give GF2MX perf (TomsHW RadVE)

It does depend on your budget and reqs, but it would make VERY little sense to settle for anything less than a GF4TI4200-128MB. See how much the 4400 and 4600 cards are though. Rad9700 is awesome if you have the cash and don't mind the pitfalls involved. If your gaming reqs are small then a GF3, Rad9000PRO or more preferably a Rad8500 are decent cards and come in 128MB versions too!

So basicly the breif answer is 4200128MB, any brand just look out for any interesting bundles and features.

Thanks for the imput, i found a good deal at the geeks, for a gf3 ti 500, $97 less with teh coupon code. I am really excited about this card should be plenty suffiecent for me

GF3TI500 is certainly a very nice card, although you will be hit hard if it 'only' has 64MB. GF3 like Rad8500 cards gain VERY little extra perf from the faster CPUs but are still very capable gaming solutions and excellent performers. GF3 do lose out to both Rad8500 and GF4TI for image quality, dual display and TVout but like the GF4TI they sport excellent AA and Aniso, as I say they are still very good cards.

So pretty much a TI4200 with 128MB (brand name does not matter) will do for me.

I ordered Gainward golden sample from Googlegear for like $165(there's a 185 one too)
It's able to clock memory at 520 at least supposedly, one review I saw had it at 320/560 and it performed very near a 4600 at default speeds.

Well so long as a Gainward 'Golden Sample' card doesn't cost much more than any other 4200-128MB cool. The 'Golden Sample' matters very little as all 4200 cards have great image quality, use very good cooling and the RAM is pretty much standard in all 4200-128MB cards. So unlike the GF3 days a Gainward GS isn't really any better than any other 4200-128MB card. They all have great image quality, use efficient cooling, have the same default clocks and pretty much reach the same o/c. You should expect at least 4400 perf (275/550) from any 4200-128MB card and the enhanced 4200-128MB are the ones which can hit GF4TI4600 speeds (300/650).

for $185 from newegg, you can get a retail box MSI ti4400. that is personally what i'm planning on getting in the next couple of weeks (assuming newegg doesn;t sell out of them). the ti4400 is worth the extra dough in my opinion, since it has a more advanced board design than most ti4200's, higher binned cores and bga memory.

Yeah and for 30-40 more...you can get a geforce4 ti4600 for around 220-230...I believe the albatron and the msi is around that price range....decisions decisions...
