Which knoppix for P2-366?

My friend has P2-366MHz with 64MB SDRAM, and it's running very sluggish with WinXP(duh).
With all these versions out there, I'm confused which one I should get for her.

Would you guys recommend it for the computer illiterate or should she just install win98?
I haven't tried it yet, so I can't say.

is there no hard drive in there?

you can drop most linux distros on there, just have to futz around a little to get the gui. I would put a bsd + icewm on there and call it a day.

Install 98 or tweak xp. Linux is really not more difficult than Windows but she undoubtedly has some experience with Windows and help is easier to come by. Tried giving my sister an old laptop with knoppix and and lite gui. She returned it in a few days and made me install Windows. Use Classic theme, no desktop, remove unneeded services and startups, blah blah blah.

Did all of that, turned everything to performance and turned off useless services. Windows starts up with 4MB available memory.

I Win2000 much better than XP? Or is win98 my safest bet?

If she can afford Windows XP (I'm assuming it's not pirated, then again it's AT and I'm probably wrong) then she can afford a couple megs more memory. My wife runs Windows 2000 on her Celeron 366 with 192MB of RAM and it's fine for her. She has a 15GB 7200RPM drive too so that helps a bit as well. I'd upgrade her machine to 256MB of RAM, keep XP and perhaps upgrade the drive to a 7200RPM one if she doesn't already have one (I'm sure you can find a used one for a couple dollars somewhere).

I wouldn't put anything better than Windows 98SE on a computer like that personally.

Why not? If you add a bit more memory it's fine. Granted you're not going to be playing any games or editing videos, but if all you do is surf the net and write an occasional paper, then XP is a viable option. Sure it may require more resources than 98 but the security benefits outweigh that IMO. Of course I expect someone to snicker at WinXP and security being mentioned in the same sentence.
