My modem (a supraexpress internal 56i ISA non-winmodem) finally got toasted by lightning and need to replace. My question is; what is the best PCI winmodem at reasonable cost and what is the best Non-winmodem still available. The modem is an internal modem. I have not been in the market for awhile so am not up to speed on current modem selections or quality. Thanks

Best PCI Winmodem?
I had great luck with the Zoom Model 2925 PCI FaxModem ($49 less $10 rebate)until I bought an HP 952C Printer. I had the printer and noted that whenever I tried to print while connected online the printer would go garbled. I'd go offline and print OK. Well I had a USrobotics PCI hardware Model 5610 that I had some trouble with earlier. I reinstalled it and now I can print online or off. I guess the winmodem was distracting the processor but it was a great modem for the money. You can still get the US robotics 5610 for about $99 but be aware that US Robotics sold out the analog modem section to some other company so I don't know about future support or repair.

Try to find one with the Lucent chipset. I believe that Zoom and Actiontech both use the Lucent chips on their modems.

I would say that the best non-winmodem (and best modem in general) is an external 3com/US Robotics. I've had one for about a year and it's the best modem I've ever had. Once you get an external modem you'll never go back to internal.

I just replaced an ISA Aopen FM-56IUT2 hardware modem with a USR PCI 2677 OEM Harware modem. Connects about the same, but my pings lowered about 75 across the board. I was really surprised.

Best PCI winmodem? I've had great luck with the SupraMax PCI and they have a five year warranty to boot. They'll replace them no problem.

In regards to modem I personally am sold on any USR modems. They are pretty reliable and comes w/one of the best after support in the industry.
A case in point, I had two modems (generic Lucent chip + USR Courier ext) that was destroyed by a lightening the same exact time. The Lucent had no warranty/support but the USR modem that I got off an auction few yrs back came w/a limited life time warranty. (no receipt, box, manuals, documentations, etc...) When I call their tech support, I didn't expect them to issue me an USO(they had different name for RMA) so quick + hassle free. I had a replacement in 10 days period that they approximated.
During this time, I purchased a PCI USR winmodem from a local shop as a temp until I get mine back from their after support. It got killed by a lightening again and the store which I bought it from replaced it after varifying that it indeed was dead, saying that USR warranty takes care of it. During this time, I complained to my phone company (Bell) about what keeps happening everytime it rained and they said that nothing was wrong w/the phone line but two days later had no less than 4 trucks from the phone company in every "man-holes" in my neighborhood repairing all the lines for the next few weeks.
About two weeks ago, I purchased two ext. 56k USR modems from a trader off AGN and one of them was connecting at half the speed. The trader said he'll take it back but I wanted to see if I could get it to work first and I emailed USR tech support explaining the problem. I get a fast reply w/a RMA number but I wind up solving it by their free flash upgrade program.
Needless to say, no more generic modems for me. I like having modems that Windows 9x/2K seems to have native support included w/the OS and where the manufacturer have such a hassel free warranty policies.

I agree with those postings that say that 3COM/US Robotics is regarded as the best brand, generally. I used an internal ISA modem of theirs w/o a problem for a long time until I switched to DSL. I beliewe the modem division was sold off recently - people don't want to pay a lot for a modem - they're just a commodity now. Their best modem, although expensive and probably overkill for normal use, is called the V Everything (or something like that). It is an external modem, which to me is really a nuisance - modems should be unseen & unheard & out of the way, in my opinion, but to each his own.

MORE IMPORTANTLY - WHY GET A WINMODEM?
It is true they are cheaper but they use your CPU to do their work, slowing down your system noticeably, I believe. There is nothing wrong in using an ISA modem - that's the major reason there are still ISA slots on motherboards. Most PCI modems are Winmodems and the term Winmodem is a tradename of U.S. Robotics. The generic term for a winmodem is software modem, as distinct from hardware modems which do all their own processing. If the box says you need to have Windows then it is probably a Winmodem also. A lot of sales people don't know a winmodem from a windsock.

some winmodem are crap because they are 100 percent software driven
They are as follow, wisecom 56K
and some other crappy cheappy that ranges from 9.99 to 14.99..
The worst's worst? soft56K or called micromodem56K, or audiomodemriser
those onboard 56K bundled with motherboards
you name it amptron, pc100, etc... onboard are all horrible.
avoid at all cost...

these are the one that utilizes both hardware and software to save
cost and still comparable to those expensiver full hardware modem.
They probably use 5-25 percent software, and 75-95 percent hardware therefore you see little lost in cpu speed when connected
Their prices average about 29.99
and yes they do connect well, never a disconnect
and they connect very fast of about 30sec and alway connect

creative labs digicom 56K Pci rating 10
best data motorola 56K PCI rating 7
Viking component 56K PCI rating 9
