Left 4 Dead = Fun at first and then progressively gets old, it's too boring and repetitive to play by about the month mark.
Team Fortress 2 = Fun at first and stays fun for years

L4D for me, by far.

I can understand why people would like TF2, but i just don't find the cartoony look & gameplay all that awesome.

I have only demo'd L4D and from my experience it was a fantastic game. I hear that from others as well, though many people relent that L4D does get stale after a while. Having played tf2 for 300+ hours since its release, I would have to say that despite my limited knowledge about L4D that I doubt it can achieve the same continued fun and enjoyment that tf2 has brought me.

Although L4D is more fun on multiplayer (where you will get the most out of it) do consider that you can play it on single player, unlike tf2, if that will ever be an issue for you. Either way, playing with others online is where the most fun is to be had, and finding servers / a community to play with will make either game more enjoyable.

If you are going to play with a small group of family members or close friends, Left 4 Dead is great. It is much harder to enjoy with random people though. In the later case, TF2 would be better.

Team Fortress 2.

I also own and I do like L4D a lot, but compared to TF2 it's just what I like to call a "filler" game. I play L4D only when I really don't feel like playing anything else to be honest, but I do enjoy playing L4D from time to time, although I wouldn't spend more than two hours or so on it in one session, or else it gets boring fast.

You can get TF2 for ten bucks when it's on sale, but even at 20 it makes a good pastime. When I first got it, I liked it okay, but could take it or leave it. After I got into the groove, it became more fun and I can usually find a server I enjoy, and as you learn to play more classes it's fun to switch around to do what your team needs on the fly.

Having said that, L4D has also gone a long way with me. I'd probably wait until it's on sale for 25 bucks again though. There just aren't a lot of good coop games around, and if you are able to play with friends, or luck onto a good random team now and then it's a worthwhile experience.

For at least a couple of months I played it almost every night for a while, and I'm kind of taking it easy for now until a bit more content comes, plus the new survival mode. If you join a lot of random games like I do, you meet some cool people, and also trolls and griefers, and sometimes I feel like backing away for a few days instead of getting all Type A stressful

Yeah for that, i play UT2k4/UT3/Quake Live.
Far more exciting or rewarding getting a difficult shock combo pulled off or headshotting in those games than TF2 for me.

Other than the scout, TF2 is slow as molasses & honestly bores me...

TF2 by a mile. L4D is fun too though, so that should give you an idea how good TF2 is.

TF2 for me, but only b/c the peeps I know play it. If I had that for L4D, I'm sure I'd love it as well, but L4D seems to get more repetitive a bit faster for me.

this

There is not enough content for L4D to have any lasting power unless you like playing the same 2 maps over and over. TF2 has an infinite amount of maps and mods and everything.

I have a couple of other things to say about this comparison, not about quibbling over who likes what, but as far as the nature of the games. Team Fortress 2 is typically played with team damage off, and L4D with team damage on. Team damage is a huge factor concerning whether a person can casually enjoy a game with a random group of people.

Hard core gamers normally scoff at having damage off, but it seems very acceptable in TF2 because of the other complexities that keep the game strategically interesting, and the relatively casual nature of the average TF2 match.

In L4D, team damage is likewise fitting, and it varies a lot depending upon what difficulty level you play in campaign modes, as well as in versus, where the damage isn't relatively high, but is always noticed and has a cumulative effect. Also worth noting is that the small number of players combined with the inherent occurrences of observer mode time (particularly in Versus mode while playing infected) cause players to tend to make acute judgements about how each other should play.

On the other hand, in TF2 there is (usually) relatively little scrutiny about what you choose to do or try, apart from general remarks such as "we need another medic" or maybe "we should have an engineer" etc. In short, what I'm saying is, both games have settings that are fitting to them, but if you are a Type A personality who wants to have fun without added stress, TF2 is a safer choice. If you fancy yourself more of a hardcore player, maybe you can enjoy either, though TF2 feels less serious.
