To the OP: It depends if the extra performance is worth the extra $100 or so to you or not.. The XT is generally faster, and has 512mb ram, which will be better if you hold on to the card long enough. It also has more advanced features, such as non angle dependant AF, which gives you better AF. But really it just depends on if the advantages the XT has over the GTX are worth your extra $100. You can make a good argument for either card, its just a personal preference.

Honestly at the prices these things are at, you should be looking at the GTX 512.

The XT is not closer to the amout of the 512mb card. The cheapest 512 GTX I could find from the "Big 3" (my three best stores, ZZF, newegg, and Monarch) is $750. Not one them have any in stock however. Monarch shows an eta of January.
The XT can be had for $570 from newegg, and cheaper at other online stores. Which puts it much closer to the 256mb price, than the 512mb price. The XT is (from newegg) $98 more than the cheapest 256mb GTX. While the XT is $198 cheaper than any 512mb GTX listed on newegg, which isnt even in stock. So again, you are incorrect saying the XT is closer to the price of the 512mb GTX.
I dont see how you can say someone should be looking at the 512mb GTX, when a card for $300 lower (256mb GTX) and $200 lower (XT) gives you much more performance for the money. Heck, you can get 2x7800GT's and a SLI mobo for the same price as one 512mb GTX, and they will give you better performance.
