Looking to get back into the RPG scene but I cant decide on which game I want to play.

FFXI. Yes, 11..I really enjoyed it when it first came out but never got to a high level. Still alive???

Aion. Never played, gameplay video looks appealing to me. I like thats its not p2p. Anyone got a trial so that I can try??

WoW. Did the trial probably a year or two ago, dont think I sub'd. Dont mind that its p2p, but its WoW.

FFIV. Played a little bit of the beta, I didnt have too much of a problem loading it as most did, but it was beta and just couldnt get use to it. Is it better now??

Doing the GW trial, its ok. Id rather wait for GW2.
DAO. Have it, stopped playing after a bit.

Mass Effect 1 & 2. It's more of a shooter than anything you listed, but still has enough RPG elements that it should keep you entertained.

All of your options suck. The only true MMO is Eve, if it's an MMO you want. If you just want an RPG, yeah Mass Effect is a good option.

There is no limit in Eve, compared to every other RPG, MMO or otherwise. There are no levels, no experience except real actual experience. While you are scrapping for hundreds of thousands of dollars, others are controlling territory or handing off billions. You will spend years dreaming of one day doing that thing you want to do, meanwhile finding various means to accomplish all the goals in between. And you will never be satisfied.

It's pretty much real life in Eve. You can't just join a guild, you have to apply to a corporation who will want references because corporate espionage is real. Eve makes other RPG's look like child's play. You probably won't like it because deep down you don't really like RPG's, you like pretending to like RPG's.

Best free MMO that has enough content and quality to compete with most 'big' MMO's?

Lord of the Rings Online. I dislike LoTR, I did not enjoy the books but enjoyed the films for their atmosphere and action ... but I loved my time in LoTRO when it was pay monthly.

Now that it's free, you can enjoy most of the game and the fantastic community that they had has only been slightly tainted by the influx of new players from what I've been told from my old Kinship (clan/guild) mates.

Of the options you listed, WoW will probably be your best option. I stopped playing after The Lich King expansion, but my time in that was simply amazing. Don't pay attention to what the haters have to say about this game, it's still in my opinion the only MMO out there that is done right, with the largest community of gamers out there supporting it, obviously. I quit the game a while back because it was such a timesink, but very tempted to pick it up again now that Cataclysm is out and I've been hearing how they've changed all the terrain, which will be very interesting to revisit, if just for nostalgia's sake.

Aion is a very boring game, I made the mistake of picking it up hoping to find something new to play but the game got boring VERY FAST for me. I don't know if they fixed it since but the game is a continuous grind, and not even a fun one at that.

Someone mentioned Lord of the Rings Online. This is also a pretty fun MMO. I gave it a whirl before it went F2P, and I really enjoyed it, I may also go back to it again now that it's free.

Here is a hint, every MMO can be played while doing all you listed. They all have tons of downtime.

Eve is an excellent game but it isn't for everyone. It lets you do anything you want and it doesn't hold your hand at all. You are thrown into a big mean galaxy and have to use your wits to survive. You are given all the tools you need to not be scammed and such, the only thing you aren't given is common sense and some intelligence and that is what people will pray on just like in real life.

The people that "get" Eve will experience a game like no other. Most the others that don't "get" it will never understand and blame the game more often then themselves for faults.

No other game comes close to the experience of Eve. It is only as boring as the amount of risk you take in the game, just like any other MMO. But unlike other MMO's, there is no level cap. There is no end of the story. There is no last thing for you to do.

Exactly. Sure you can sit there and watch lasers hit rocks, or you can be scanning every cruiser or smaller ship that passes by running calculations in you head to see if blowing it up and losing your current ship (in high-sec space at least since the Concord police will eventually show up and blow you up) is worth what you get in drops from the ship you just popped.

Or you could be sweating up a storm constantly watching "local" to see if anyone/group jumps into your system in low-sec/null-sec where you are blowing up NPC pirates for their bounties/drops, try not to need to change your pants when a group of 40+ people jump in, only to realize they are simply using your system as a jump-bridge to get to a war that broke out 8 systems over....

Personally, I prefer action. There are times though when that action is boring (blowing up someone's POS with just a few battleships), but for the most part, I play for the fun. I do some boring stuff just to keep me in ships that I use to blow things up in. Bonuses for blowing things up and making isk at the same time. So I do some market trading, which I spend about 2 hours doing a week, and the rest of the time I am blowing things up.

Pretty much if you want to really enjoy an MMO, you have to dedicate a good portion of your life to it. It IS essentially an alternate life. I need to quit reading these Eve threads...grr.
