Have xppro at work and 98 at home
I've read different opinions on this. Most people agree that unless you have a retail upgrade or full retail xp pro package, the sp2r2 will install but the windows update feature won't work.
I can get an oem xp pro full pretty cheap, but considering the number of xp updates in the past, I don't want to be without future updates.
Can anyone confirm whether you will be able to update an oem xppro on a homebuilt machine?

Yes, you can use it, and windowsupdate works fine - someone is lying to you, or doesn't know what they're talking about. You just have to buy it with hardware, e.g. a $5 mouse or IDE cable.

You're not technically buying the OEM copy legally if you just buy a mouse or something with it. It is only supposed to be distributed "with purchase or sale of a new PC."

I've built over 25 computers and installed OEM XP Operating Systems on them.
Most were HOME, but 1/4 were PRO.

They all work perfectly, no problems with the updates.

ANY hardware purchased at the same time counts, even a twenty-five cent jumper wire.
(They sell you the wire for $ 5.25, and give you a $ 5 off discount = 25 cents)
What's also done is that they credit the 25 cents as well, so you get it free with XP.

From NewEgg

And for the Homeys

Pretty sure it can be bought with the purchase of a part that is necessary to the operation of the computer.

This is from another thread All Thanks to Dapunisher who found it ( Pulled from PlanetAMD64) and this is from Brian Marr of Microsoft:

'My name is Brian Marr and I work in the Windows Client Product Management
Team - I am the product manager for Windows XP64, which means that I am
responsible for making the decisions that will affect how you get your hands
on the product (along with a few other things).

4. The OS will be sold through System Builders and Distributors.
You can either purchase it pre-installed on a system builder PC or just
purchase the OS with some piece of hardware. As Darrell mentioned on
another thread, this can really be anything (a cable, for example). If your
system builder of choice wants to only sell it with high-end components, I'd
suggest finding a new place to buy your equipment.
'

He is talking about 64bit windows but I skipped the other points he made (not revelant to this thread)

If the head of Microsoft's 64Windows development team doesn't have a problem with us purchasing oem software with just a cable than I highly doubt it is illegal.

By the way if you want to read more about this go to the thread under Operating Systems

I'm not sure about your computer, but my computer requires cables to be operational.

In fact Brian of Microsoft expressed surprise that people are angry that there will be no retail XP 64 because he thought most people (i.e. those who would upgrade to Windows 64 only bought OEM :laugh::beer:[/quote]
