anyone having problems with ZoneAlarm Pro in whistler beta 1? my os crashed (blue screen) a couple of times with ZoneAlarm Pro 1.0, uninstalled it, and now good to go. by the way, does anyone actually like the new start menu appearance? One last thing, how good is that personal firewall included in whistler (as a part of network setting).

I set up a couple Whistler boxes for the company that I work for. No one - including myself likes the super huge start menu bar. I mean, it looks kinda cool because it is something different, but I immediately went back to the old start menu bar as I could.

Have you been able to crash it at all? I have this OS on a lowly Dell Optiplex GX 110, so I have yet to be able to test it with real hardware. But, I wonder about the compatibility with GeForces and A3D sound cards of the world.

I must admit that I like the Linux / Mac OS 9 multi user login prompt. I also like the new splash screen that is all black. I think that this OS is more visually appealing than the previous MS OSes, but not really much more. And of course, all the wizards are annoying. The control panels is a joke too. They really tried to make this for stupid people with no computer experience. Why can't they just recommend a Mac to the technically challenged instead?

They are making operating systems way to full of wizards. It seems that these new versions of Windows are getting worse in my eyes from all that bloated wizard junk.

I am running the Beta1 now on this hardware testing at home:

Asus CUSL2 (latest BIOS)
PIII 800EB @ 960 (160FSB)(PAL35T by Alpha)
Crucial CAS2 PC133 256mb
Asus V6800 Pure DDR 32mb
SBLive! XGamer
3Com NIC on AT&T @Home
Adaptec 39160 Ultra160 LVD PCI SCSI
5 - 9.1GB IBM U160 (Software RAID5)
Plextor 40X SCSI
S&F Mach12 External 12x10x32 SCSI

Is that serious enough hardware for you jsm ?
I have had " 0 " compatibility issues thus far with my hardware or apps and no BSOD's as of yet. It is a bit cluttered looking, but it runs great on my machine. I am dual booting w/ 2000 Pro SP1 of course. Seems like 3DMark2K likes it a little better than 2000 or 9x so far, as my scores did improve quite a bit. My only complaint is the start menu is too "fat". It did auto-detect all of my hardware and installed it al perfect in the initial install, very amazing... The firewall is very basic though, not robust at all. Just my thoughts and experiences with it. How about you?

Zone Alarm Pro 1.0 working fine, for me.
Has anyone running Whistler/Win2000 had this problem?:
Although IRQ's #2,#3 & #11 are unused, IRQ #5 has three devices: 3dfx V3-2000; SBLive; & PCI-to-USB Bridge. Unable to select, either through bios (Abit BH6) or in Safe Mode, any other IRQ's. Dual-booting Win2000 gives similar conflicts. Video speed is reduced, due to sharing between video, sound card & USB.
(Parallel & Com 2 are disabled in bios).

So, is separating these into different IRQ's possible?

I'm running Beta 1, the latest version. You can change the start menu back to normal.

Anyway, it does look too eye candyish, but it's not a bad OS. I had absolutely no problems testing it on a work system.. Booted right up onto the network and on the net w/ T1s at work.

Still no luck w/ ZoneAlarm Pro...it locks up when I launch MS Outlook (using Exchange server). Also, no good with NAV 2001. Maybe the problems are bios-related? Is it possible that the bios needs an update for some applications to be compatible with whistler although certain applications appear to be fully compatible?

FYI, the whistler beta 1 (2296) is installed on a compaq armada M700 notebook (PIII 700).

Yep, stay away from NAV 2001, it damn near killed my installation. I did actually end up reinstalling as i couldnt uninstall NAV2001 (figures, screwed up the OS on installl, but cant possibly let me get rid of the bastard ) and the selective startup crap i had to do to get into the OS at all meant i would get prompts and stuff at logon, but seeing as im intending on really using it i wanted that crap gone. Took 2 more installs to get my modem working again cause Whistler really doesnt seem to like my Win2000 drivers for my diamond - on first reinstall it would find it and install my drivers but then wouldnt show it, and when i causght it mid-install when it still wasnt properly recognised and tryed to delete it i couldnt cause it claimed it was needed for boot, then it vanished again.

Just about to take an image of this installation before i really play with this bad boy

It's only legally availble to public beta testers, people with MSDN subscriptions, and various others in the business.

Although I'm not going to advocate it, many people get copies from public servers around the net. It just takes one guy to break his NDA and copy the CD or post an ISO image, and half the world will have access to it within a few weeks. I'm sure that's how the majority of the people around here got their copy.
