Okay, I read your story and saw your mistake. You LEAD the speeding group... or you were alone. If you are alone, you shouldn't speed. If you are in a group of speeders, you don't lead, you stay in the back. That way, when they are shooting laser to speeders ahead, you are picking up the little "blips" on your radar, and think, hmm... then slow down. (At least on the V1, it picks up the lasers ahead).

As for it being useless... that statement is wrong. The reason is because it is a radar detector, not a laser detector. Its function is to detect radar, and if it does so, it's not useless. If, in your area, all they use is laser, then yes it is useless to carry a radar. Therefore, you get something to fight laser... which you stated in your thread. Most police departments in my area do not carry lasers, since it is fairly new. Therefore radar detectors are NOT useless in my area.

Ok, first off, all interested please read my long post in this thread:

previous whistler thread

And I am not trying to flame, jokersmoker has brought us many great deals, but i am simply sharing my knowledge of the general topic of radar detectors and how well they work. And as far as I know, detectors are legal everywhere in the US except Virginia and Washington, D.C. They are mostly illegal in Canada except for a few provinces. But the conclusion I came to after getting my first and last ticket (I had a $330 Escort detector) is that it's useless unless you drive a stealth bomber...

I thought California outlawed them too...

Only $6 shipping to cali, not too bad. Tempting...

All radar detectors are pretty much useless. Most cops these days use instant-on radar or LIDAR/laser. Your V1 won't help you with LIDAR, and instant-on renders it useless unless you're behind traffic. The only way to "safely" speed is mental alertness.

- Try to speed with someone else, and let them take the lead, i.e. follow another speeder (and keep an eye on your rear-view mirror for cops coming up behind you to pace you).
- If there's a lot of traffic, always watch what the people ahead are doing. If you see peoples' brake lights lighting up, hit yours too. Just about everyone hits the brakes if they see a cop, even if they're not speeding.
- If you're alone on the road, be as alert as you can be and look ahead as far as you can see. If you can't see very far, don't speed.

My advice is to forget speeding on the public roads and take it to the track (drag strip, road course, etc..). I was just at Gingerman in South Haven Michigan a couple of days ago with the local Corvette club and got all my speeding tendencies out of my system. What an awesome track btw..

I also agree that radar detectors are almost useless. I had my 2 year old Escort Solo with me going to Michigan and the thing went off so many times, that I might as well have just gone at a practical speed over the limit (5-10 over) and forgot about it. The radar detector is more of a distraction if anything.

sorrie dude, they're not allowed to destroy your private property. if the cop does that, you can sue the crap out of whoever he works for.

Who are you going to sue, dude? The State of VA for destroying an illegal device that they deemed illegal, which makes it just as illegal as drugs or drinking and driving, or anyone of the other laws that lawmakers passed in that state? Have you ever had a radar dector in VA? Have you ever been caught with one?

I did 19 years ago, and guess what, the officer confiscated the dector, took it back to his cruiser where he took a polaroid snap of it, then placed it in a zip lock, took it to the shoulder of the highway and stomped it. Tagged the bag, wrote me a ticket and told me to have a nice day. This happened about 50 miles north of Bristol, TN.

VA does confiscate them, weather or not they still destroy them I don't know, but nearly 20 years ago they did.

No they won't, don't be stupid.

I think the other state that bans detectors is Connecticut.

Pretty self explanatory there huesman on who is being stupid. If you don't know the answer, keep your fat mouth shut.

Well about 6 years ago while riding as a passenger, I asked the driver who was using a radar detector while driving thru VA to Bristol, TN, if cops actually had radar detector, detectors. My question was answered when we were pulled over about 15 minutes later for using a radar detector.

The cop asked for it, and took it back to his car, recorded the serial #, wrote him a ticket, but gave his radar detector back. Gave him a warning it would be confiscated the next time if caught.

That's why you need the Radar detector detector detector! I actually seem to recall that is a feature mine has.

Oh, and thanks Joker. My wife just got a ticket today, so I may pick this up for her.

Has anyone gotten it yet? What kind of power cable does it have? Mine has a springy wound one that is quite annoying IMO. I hope this has a straight wire that I can run out of the way along her windshield to the visor.

Well I am past the warning stages, I found the best defense was to slow down. Esp in VA. You can do almost any speed you want through TN, but hit that VA state line you had better slow down to 55 - 60 tops.

I always thought that I-75 meant it was a 75MPH zone till I got above Bristol, doing 74 and almost took a reckless charge, instead I had my detector taken and a nice hefty ticket.

Some more comments, I saw a better model at CC for 40 dollars. When you factor in shipping, you might be better off with the other model.

Been there, done that, stupid. Cop gives detector back to you after writing you up. If your only "evidence" is 19 years old, maybe you should F off and die. It is NOT illegal to own a radar detector in Va. It's illegal to operate one.

Extract from § 46.2-1079: "Any such device or mechanism may be taken by the arresting officer if needed as evidence, and, when no longer needed, shall be returned to the person charged with a violation of this section, or at that person's request, and his expense, mailed to an address specified by him."

NOT BRAND NEW !
Just received mine today and there are scratches and marks all over the darned thing. Definitely not brand new; there's wear and tear evidence all over it. Possibly a refurb or even just Used. Of course no mention of this being other than brand new unit on the website. Maybe explains the low price.

If anyone else has received one, then let us know the condition. Maybe mine was a one-off. Either way, this one is going back :|
