I tried my first two white flesh peaches yesterday. Wow. They are great. I don't know if I just got two really good ones, but they were the best tasting fruit I ever ate. Nectarines are now number two.

White peaches are pretty good for "eating out of hand," but aren't so good for cooking/baking.

Nectarines...I'm not a fan. (close relative of the peach, but NOT the same)

Love peaches (can eat them for hours) but I'm with boomer on the nectarines.

You want to light up your taste buds in a similar fashion, grab a nice big chojuro pear sometime when it's hot out and you're thirsty.

Actually, and I just learned this, a nectarine is a variety of peach that has a recessive gene. I always thought they were a cross between a peach and plum, but they're not.

I usually find the yellow ones to be tastier and sweeter, if they're mature enough (if you drop them, they undergo a plastic transformation).
The white ones are more firm though so they make less of a mess.

Try out Asian Pears, they are really sweet. Costco sells the really large ones.

In my experience, white peaches are more tender/delicate than yellow peaches of the same (basic) variety. That's also what makes them not as good for cooking...

They are freakin awesome, possibly one of the juiciest things I've ever sunk my teeth into.

I think chojuros are the best variety, though they don't get gigantic like the ones I devoured in Korea. First time I tried one I ended up eating 4 more.

I guess there are different kinds.

The yellow one I was talking about has yellow pulp, red skin and is hairy (peach fuzz), and it's small too. It came from the garden so it was always very mature.
I think there also are yellow hairless species and those are in fact harder.

I used to love peaches, but the past few years my peach tree in my backyard got infested with these bugs that bored into the peaches, and subsequently the tree died. Also, peaches out of the grocery store used to be good, but now, I rarely ever get a truly sweet peach. Most of the ones I get are somewhat bitter.

It's a shame, a ripe sweet peach is one of my absolute favorite fruits.

New Jersey peaches are the best (and really cheap) around this time a year. I buy 5-10 pounds and get them to the peak of ripeness in a brown paper bag. Then I refrigerate the peaches and eat them for a solid month. I very rarely get anything less than a solid 9-10 every time. There's nothing better.
