Alright here it goes for all you smart people. I am looking for a new camera. I was looking at the Canon s30 but I think that $450 might be alot for as much I will use a camera. What in your mind is the best all around 2 MP digital camera. I what to spend around $250 but if you can sway me towards a camera that might be more expensive i will. Please be objective but don't put others down for there opinion!

Fuji Finepix 2600Z

You can find it under 300 bucks.

Got it a few weeks ago and LOVE it!here's some pics i took with it

they were 1280x1024, but i shrunk them down for posting on the web

What'd you shrink them to? And does it shrink the resolution, or just the physical size? This is an area I'm stuck with.

Oooh, those really are nice pictures! Where is that, DC?

I've read good reviews for the Fuji Finepix series cameras. Not too many options and fancy stuff, but takes great pictures, and easy to use. This camera is what I'd like to own too. Hey, maybe you can find it cheap on Ebay, except people there seem to have no qualm about bidding it well beyond what you can get them elsewhere! :Q

i shrunk them to 640x480 using photoshop...the pictures are stored on the camera natively @ 1280x1024

and yes, that IS DC

I researched digital cameras a few months back and went for the Canon s30 myself and love it a lot.
Takes beautiful pics and I even have some fun with the 30 second avi movies with sound. This camera will not become outdated as quickly as some lesser models may.

You might wanna take a look at the Kodak DX3900... it's a 3.1mp camera, but the price is quite a bit cheaper than the Canon's...

It's small and take great pictures too!

A second vote for the Kodak DX3900, purchused 1 a few months ago, been pretty happy since

+'s
-Take great pictures in good light, colors are what you would expect
-Price is about right for a camera of it's class
-Images are sharp , and again, everything is what you would expect
-Generally performs like you would expect it too

-'s
-Handles extreme close ups somewhat finiicky, for most people this will not be a problem ( we are talking EXTEME close up). I mention this cuz my old digi camera did do it better, for normal use one should not be to cencerned with this. But this is not a microscope unfortunatly

-Still has some trouble with dark subject matter, but heh, this is normal of all consumer cameras anyway.

-Compression shows a little on white backgrounds, for exmaple, taking a pic of you GF while she is standing in the hallway

-As i said the thing performs well and like you would expect, but it's not a perfessional camera, like any normal camera it can get a little confused with some lighting or subject matter

Here are some smaples ( do keep in mind these pics have been shrunk a little, so the real ones actually look better. Other than sizing though, no other modifications have been made )

For ultimate in portability, try the canon s110, s200, or s300, all pretty sexy-titanium, pocket-sized =P Smaller than all of those is the Dimage X digicam by Minolta, which i preordered and got upon the day it was released... still the sweetest camera i've ever held in my hand for the 2.2 mp 3x optical range. It's the size of an MD player.

Other small cameras to take into consideration:

Pentax Optio 430, or 330

Kyocera s3 (4 megapixels) size of a pack of cigarrettes.

everyone says the canon s30 is good, so i'm assuming it must be =P

do yourself a favor and stick with cameras that use compact flash as oppose to SD/MMC- i had to pay approximately 2X the price for the same amount of memory on my Dimage X.

Get the Canon A40 or S30. The Canon's tend to have better lenses than the Kodaks and Fujis in my experience. The Kodaks in particular tend to be plastic lenses and don't give you the same amount of zoom if any at all, which is why they are cheaper. The Kodaks also seem to come back a lot for repairs. IMHO, I like Canon, Nikon, Olympus, and Sony for overall camera quality. Sony will be a little more expensive for all the accessories though.

FYI, a 2(1600x1200) Megapixel camera will typically look decent up to a 5x7 print size, while a 3 Megapixel can go up to 11x14. Any of these cameras mentioned above will look fine at 1.3 Megapixels(1280x1024), which is plenty for electronic use.

Zemus , what kind of batteries are you using with your dx3900 and what kind of life do you get out of them? I know most of the current Kodaks only use 2 AA at a time and this should make the battery life VERY short, even with rechargables. Just curious.

Grice, what is your main use for the camera? Are you going to print pics or just use them on the computer? If you are interested in printing, then I would steer you toward the $299 price range, where you will find most of the decent 2 megapixel cameras. If you don't care for doing any printing, then 1.3 megapixels is plenty for that(its more than what most people run their monitor at, at least outside of this forum)

For candid shots the Canon S200 or S330.

I have the older S110, cant wait for Canon to cram a bigger CCD and zoom into them, then it's upgrade time

The Kodak DX3900 use pretty much all kinda of AA configurations, not normal AA batteries is not recommended.

I use two rechargable NI-MH 1.4 Amp batteries, these provide me about 160-200 pictures on average. The specs in the maual claim you will get about 163 with this type of battery

The camera comes with 1 lithium ION non recharageable battery, that one gave me over 300 pictures, but of course is not recharagble.
