Whoa! Is my CPU too hot.

I picked up a XP 1600+ during the Newegg sale and installed it the other day. I noticed that in the temp readouts in the BIOS (as well as Motherboard Monitor) the my CPU temp hovers at about 59c...when I'm not doing anything. No overclocking. I got the Glacialtech fan that I saw recommended, but my temps are nothing like the ones posted here. Is this normal? It seems a bit high for me. It goes down to about 53c with the side panel off. I am adding a second case fan tommorow to see if that helps.

Let me know, I don't want to fry this thing.

That seem little bit high. Check to see your Vcore setting and make sure your heatsinks make good contact.

If the temps drop that much with the side panel of your case off then you have some bad airflow inside.
The heat isn't getting out. The AXP is supposed to run up to 90C but I'd start getting worried at 70C

I put a 80mm fan in the back to suck out some of that hot air. Now the temp at idle with the case closed is 53c, and about 56c under full load. Good for now, but I want to get a little closer to 50c.

90°C is the max surviving temperature of that processor, not the max operating temperature, a lot of ppls mix those up, max operating temp can vary from processor to processor mostly batch by batch, this is reflected in how well a proc can overclock but thats only a small aspect and Oc has many other factors that define a max OC

genrally anything over 60°C is not good for your processor's health and stability, but u will find processors that crash out at 60°C and u will find processors that will work fine at 70°C

Don't overlook case designs. Some cases arent' "up to snuff" when it comes to proper cooling. The case I bought has great air-flow, and a good number of fan locations. I use three Stealth 80mm fans @ 2600rpm, a volcano 7 cpu cooler, arctic alumina thermal paste, and active ddr cooling. My system runs idle at 29-30 c, and my CPU @ 39-40. Full load temps. after many hours of serious 3d gaming around 33 system and 47 cpu. My particular case is a Foxconn. I really like it. My case and cooling investments are less than $200.

I know my temps. are not "special", but I just wanted to point out that you're likely not getting the best temps. for your current system. I haven't got up the nerve to OC yet, but soon! Nothing tweaked with my system, just airflow.

Hope this helps.

Wise words. I have to go out and get a case and new CPU cooler because right now, with the side panel off, my XP 1600+ is at 50C idle! :| During game play it will get just over 60C and BAM, hard lock! I know it is a heat issue because when I put a big ass fan beside my case (with the side panel off) blowing air inside, I get no more lock ups. I've got my Antec case and Alpha on the way though. These XPs runs hotter than I anticipated. :disgust:

Well without stating mobo model all the assumption up above are useless....

many using newer amd mobos are seeing similar results...The reason is the newer mobos are starting to read from the internal diode and no flaky socket a surfcae measurements. The board you have may read from this internal diode and a partial reson for higher temps then you likely see reported by others....At best you may not be able to get this temp much lower then 48c with air cooling....

1) Ddid you install hsf properly??
2) Did you use AS3??
3) Do you have adequate case cooling??
4) What are the system and case temps??
5) what is ambient room temp??

all important questions that also need to be answered to really see if much can help reduce this temp reported...

These are valid points;

Make sure your hsf is seated properly on you chip and make sure you use AS3 and that it is applied properly. A thin coat is all that is needed on mirror finished hsf's. Case fans are very important, but you want more cfm's out than in. Cool air turns to hot air vey quickly. If your not getting rid of the hot air in your case no amount of cool air in will actually cool your components. I've read that XP's are good only to 70c and MP's are good to 90c. But not really. 60c is ultimately the limit. I've got my BIOS set to shut down at 60c and set for warning at 50c. I have an MP2000+ AGOIA running at 1900mhz w/air cooling that NEVER gets over 46c at load. I am using an alpha hsf w/delta 68cfm fan and it's a little noisy, but it works. Just my opinion

He still needs to post his mobo model so we can see if in fact this is a newer mobo that reads from the internal diode and thus explains the warmer temps and why he can't compare himself to many others...

Also, what is the ambient temp in ur room? That also (in addition to finding out if your mobo is reading an internal diodemight help explain some of the higher temps you're seeing. That second fan will be good for your case as well.

2 things
1.what is the cpu casing you are using ?
2.what is your room temps..

1.if you are using a mid tower case you might not get much improvement even after you took the side panel off
usually mid tower casing PSU placement is right on top of your CPU n HSF so even w/o the side panel you would still get bad airflow

2.room temps can affect your system temps... when i haven't installed an AC unit in my room my cpu temp always range from 50-57C (full load) .. it's pretty hot in my country about 32C everyday ... so an Air Conditioning Unit helps a lot...
(i used to use a Delta "Screamer" back in those days now i can use the OEM HSF w/ temps around 39-44C on my Athlon 1800+)

the best of luck
and may the force be with you
