JB fixed many of the minor annoyances that I had with ICS. Before if I reopened the music player through the drop down bar, and then I pressed "back" it would go back to whatever screen I was on before. (messaging, home screen). Now it goes back in albums in the music player like it should.

JB is also smooth and its getting close to the iphone/windows phones fluidity. ICS was a huge step forward from GB but ICS was jittery as hell at times.

I understand how to use clockwork mod. (Have a hp touchpad). But I have never rooted an android device.

I got the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit, but I am afraid of messing something up and am looking for more specific instructions. Maybe I am just looking in the wrong places.

Also what are people seeing as the best rom for Verizon.

Thanks
Right now if you want the NEW 4.1 Jellybean, there are 3 to choose from
If you want a rock stable ROM, I'd choose AOKP or CM9.

Just try everything.
Make sure to back stuff up.

Im on Vanirbean v7 with LeanKernal and the JB easteregg bootanimation

The Galaxy Nexus Toolkit is pretty easy to use. Just follow the prompts. Keep in mind if your bootloader isn't unlocked already, the phone is going to get totally wiped (storage included)when you unlock it.

Can someone help a newbie root/unlock his Verizon Galaxy Nexus? I am on stock 4.0.4.

I know root wipes everything. What do I need to backup? I don't care about contacts/Evernote/Twitter/Facebook/apps etc since all that will get resync'd. What do you recommend backing up and how do I go about doing so?

I guess the problem is I'm not sure how to achieve root (at least temporarily) in order to back up your important data so you can safely unlock the bootloader. When I did it, I unlocked the bootloader FIRST, and it didn't matter because I hadn't even started using the phone yet. No data to lose.

If I already had data on the phone, what I'd do is use Titanium Backup to make backups of all my user apps and data... but you need root to use Titanium.

EDIT: Found something:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24910351&postcount=21

This is a method of backing up your data (not your storage, but that's done easily by just dragging everything over when it's plugged into your computer) without having root access. Essentially you will make a complete backup image, then unlock the bootloader, and once the bootloader is unlocked you will restore the image. THEN you can proceed as usual - get root, make actual backups of your apps with Titanium Backup, install a custom rom (wiping in the process), and once the rom is installed use Titanium to restore whatever app data you want. I'd caution you to only restore the data, not the apps themselves if possible. Redownload whatever apps you can.

I don't think there's a way to do a state in time backup like you can when you have root. What I was asking was advice on what was worth backing up. What I did was backup pictures, any special fonts or icons I installed for themes. That's it. Everything else like apps should be restored. I don't mind going in and fixing settings for various apps. I just don't want to wipe and then realize "Oh! I forgot ____" so I was asking for help with a list.

First install it hung at boot logo continuously. Reboot did not help. Each time I left it 15 min before battery pull. Restored to previous rom and tried again, second identical install worked, not sure what went wrong first time. Noticeably faster ui navigation. Intuitive notice bar changes, and google voice search a bit more pleasant to use. Still notice the odd slowdown/hang up with ui. Nice improvement but again could be smoother still.

Every single OS and UI has odd hangups and slowdowns. No OS is perfect.

Purchased a Verizon Galaxy Nexus yesterday off of Craigslist for $280 and promptly installed Jelly Bean. Took the SIM out of my iPad 3 and now I can get 1GB of data for $20 (no taxes or fees, quit anytime). Perfect!

I haven't tried. Why should I?

In case your phone gets jacked up (random reboots and crap)

Or if you flash an update and it jacks up, something to revert back to. I have one of ICS just in case.

Ok ill do a backup. Just curious, if the restore relies on having the file on the sd card (partition) is and on being able to get into recovery, what happens if you brick your phone? Since the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have a removable sd card, if you don't leave the backup in the sd card folder, you could be screwed if tour phone is in a state where you can't mount it to your computer and copy over a backup. Right?

Well, you can just copy over your nandroid folder to your computer once it's done so you have it backed up on your PC.

Using ROM Manager, I tried to initiate a backup. It booted into recovery/fastboot (?) and gave an error message about not being able to find or mount the sdcard partition. I then used the menu to select backup and it looked like that worked. Is this normal?

Would there ever be a case where your phone is so messed up (bricked?) that you can't a) mount it via usb so you can copy over the backup to \sdcard b) you can't get into the recovery menu to restore it?
