WHS Hardware questions. NAS/Server

I finally get my hand on a copy of Windows Home server from Newegg today!!! After MONTHS of waiting I can finally starting to build my own server. I came acroos this when I was looking for parts,

it seems like a barebone but looks like if u throw in a harddrive and ram and that's about it. I'd rather have a system like that than a doll NAS drive. Any comment/suggestions?

Why would you wait "MONTHS" to build a server?

If you're going to build a server, build a server. If you're going to buy a pre-assembled one, buy a pre-assembled one. I don't see the point in buying a half built one and finishing it.

Use old hardware.

I had a Gateway 6400 server that I bought through a deal here many moons ago that I just finished installing WHS on.

It's a P3 with 512MB ram and 3 750GB PATA drives in it. It more than does the job.

If you do choose to purchase new hardware, go cheap. Get a cheap Pentium D and a cheap board. You don't need too much RAM (512 is enough, but 1GB is better), get a case that can take a bunch of hard drives.

Yap, the OP is all over the Net. The one common line in the multi net postings is the Norco Home sever.

It looks in the pictures nice, but when all thing done, for the cost of the unit + Drives OS etc. you can build similar system for much less.

When it comes to Windows Home Server (WHS) there are three levels of Cases.

The very little one (I saw the other day a server in a case that id built to emulate a Book sits on a Book case.

Regular Case that is closed with a front door.

And the type of case like if the Norco Pictures where all the Drives are expose in the front.

I personally like a case with a front door locking the drives.

However if one like the cases with the Drive exposed I would suggest wait a little in short period of time you would this case like this available as an empty case.

For $620 with no OS and no drives, it's pretty lame. Viral marketing is also lame, especially when done as badly as this.

HP's 1TB system for $750 is a much better value, IMHO. I just wish that these guys would understand that, when it comes to systems like these, either pack a bunch of eSATA ports, or don't pack any (and just rely on USB). Just having one is a bit lame.
