Not impossible... just very unlikey. Any other shape would be able to fall in pretty easily.

no, it's impossible.

If the round manhole cover was melted or otherwise bent out of shape... or if there was even a sinkhole near the manhole, it could fall in. Just very unlikely that those things would happen.

Don't forget if a nuclear bomb destroyed the road, it could also fall in.

Other reasons:
pipes are round. Round pipe, round cover.
Why not?
Round makes it the strongest shape for a car to drive over while giving the maximum accessible space for a person to climb in.

Plus there's no "right way" to stick the thing in. It's round so it can be just plopped in w/o having to line it up.

The roundness evokes a return to the womb when you climb in, and a cleansing re-birth when you climb out.

Actually, an ellipse is better for people to climb in. What's really interesting is to look at the underside of certain planes (the Concorde for sure, I'm not sure about others but I'd imagine). See those small, elliptical metal plates? Believe it or not, those are actually MANHOLES, for the people who assembled the plane to crawl out of after riveting the insides together. You'd never believe that anyone would fit in there, but they do.
