So you are writing a paper on this topic? This is interesting!

I have to agree with Freedom. Basically, students are babied through high school by their parents and teachers. Teachers care where you are at in class and do their best to try to help you along. For me, this turned into doing all of my work in the last minute, and turning it in for a grade that was in the top 25% or so. That is because I never struggled in high school, so what I did was always pretty good.

I kept this same attitude in college. Profs would give you options like "we will have four tests and a final. You only have to take four of the tests. But if you get a grade that you want to replace, I'll let you take all five tests and drop the lowest one." This encourages students who don't have any self-discipline to fail the first or second test, and then try to study "really hard" to get good grades on the next ones and the final. Well, it never works that way. Once you get behind, it is almost impossible to get caught back up.

At least in big schools, professors don't care where you are and what you are doing. (Many smaller schools are different though...) Especially in the weed-out classes that you have to take at first (chemistry, physics, calc, etc.). They are usually in big class rooms and the professors don't take attendance. They know that if you miss class, you'll miss the notes and that hurts a lot. The professor can summarize the material and condense it better than you ever could on your own. So you end up missing material, and the professor doesn't care. (This is not a bad thing, it just makes you develop self discipline...)

Another problem is scheduling. In college, you schedule your classes the way you want to. Therefore if you have a friend that doesn't have classes on tues/thurs, you might be tempted to skip your class so you can do something with your friend. I believe that if everyone had classes at exactly the same time, there would be by-far less skipped classes.

And then distractions!!!!!! Alcohol, girls/guys, video games, in some cases drugs, partying... But there are other distractions too... going to the gym, going to get food, and even studying can be used as an excuse to not go to class.

Many of the reasons were covered above but here are my ideas in order with the most important at the top.
1) Fact is many people aren't college material. These people often start college due to pressure from parents/friends/society. Or maybe they just haven't made up their mind yet as what to do, so of course they start college to keep all the opitons open. When they are free from the pressure and have had time to consider their options, many choose to drop out.
2) Resposibility to stop distractions. I like the definition of distractions given above. Parents/schools put a lot of pressure to avoid drugs/alcohol. I knew quite a few sports people who would have partied more in high school if that wouldn't have kicked them off the team. Once you get to college the parents don't know about the parties and the college sports don't care. Same goes for studing. Parents often force high school kids to do their homework. The schools give study halls and inclass time to do the work. Doesn't happen in college - it is the students responsibility to stop the fun time and put in some study time.
3) Difficulty. In reality high school is a piece of cake. I got perfect straight As in high school and never studied once. In fact in english class I never read a single required book, yet I still got As on the tests over the book. You cannot say that about college. It requires work, effort, and time.
4) Worthless majors. This is the universities fault for offering them. What is someone going to do with a women's study major? Nothing - there are no jobs available. So why continue with your major if that happens to you? Same thing with something like an English major. Most of those graduates will earn more money working at McDonald's than writing books. When you are in a major with no job potential, there is very little incentive to stay in.
5) Time. Quite often people in college try to take on too many tasks: full time college, full time job, internship, band, sports, etc all at once. Sure there is enough time in the day to attend all those, but when do you study? When do you write a research report? When do you give time to yourself for relaxation? Often instead of dropping an activity or two, instead the student drops a class or two. Eventually a 4 year degree becomes 6 years - 6 brutal years without time for relaxation. It is just so easy just to drop the school altogether to relieve the stress.

Lack of motivation.

Some people are simply not interested in school and don't want to go to school, but society today pretty much demands that you get one.

I can't understand the video game aspect of it all. I understand drugs and alcohol or even those who are not cut out to be in college. Failing out due to video games? That is sad.

Yeah I agree. I can never see my self getting so addicted to games that I just can't stop playing them for a few hours a day to get some work done.

How about their parents did not teach them the concepts of responsibility and accountability from an early age?

I know a guy who failed out because of Everquest. Although in his own defense, he did have a level 50 character in under 2 weeks last semester.

While beer, parties, video games and the like are certainly a problem, it isn't really why I do bad in some classes (I am not failing by any means but I have a sucky 3.0 at the moment, though this should go up). Even with all the above, I still have enough time to study, and I know how to study. It is apathy that really gets me.

I'm at Tulane in New Orleans. There's a higher attrition rate here simply because of the distractions in the city. Drinking is a big part. You have to learn to make a choice to stay in when you have work. If you can do it, you're better for it, that's half the education you get at college.

1. missing classes
2. skipping assignments
3. not studying

why do they do these things? time management.
parties, family/friends/relationship problems, staying out too late, computer, internet, games and laziness.

ahh...who could forget depression and emotions in college? I dated a girl that went to Western Michigan University who not ONCE, but got raped TWICE in the same year. She filed all the required paperwork and one of the kids was sent home for the year, but she still nearly failed out that year. As it turns out, she moved out of the dorms (joined a sorority) and moved into an apartment with her best friend. After they moved in, the guy who was busted for raping her moved in right above her apartment.

i don't think it's any sadder than drugs or alcohol... all pretty lame reasons to fail.
