Why does OSX suck ...

OSX sucks, plain and simple. Its profoundly slower than my 3500+ rig and just dies with dirs containing a large number of files--DIES. Not to mention all the other stupid sh!t this OS does. How do you macophiles use this POS? Is there something i can do to make it run reasonably? I run mainly matlab, adobe, and office stuff and cant believe how slow this G5 (dual 2GHz with 1.5GB). The machine is a POS.

How many files is a "large number?" What do you mean by "dies?" How are you trying to access them?

I don't have any issues with my Mac OS X machine, but I'm not doing what you are. I'm also not a "macophile," so maybe I shouldn't be responding.

Dies == spining color wheel for EVER.

Large number == 4000.

In my experience, windows == snappy, OSX == crappy. I use both every day.

[edit] i should clarify that im not on an OSX < XP route. I am forced to use OSX and would like the experience to be better.

Then stop using OS X. Simple.

How are you trying to access them? I just opened a finder window (I'm using the panels, not icons or details) in a directory with 5,319 files and it opened in a couple of seconds.

If you're asking for help, stop being such an ass about it. If you just want to post flame bait, do it somewhere else.

Would the directory structure have a major influence? The files are on a server (part of my desktop) on a T10 line. Does OSX download all the files before its happy telling the user that its done? Granted i hate OSX, but it would be nice to know how to make it run as snappy as windows.

T10 line? 10BaseT? That will affect the speed, but I don't think it has to download _everything_. I don't do a whole lot of unencrypted file sharing though...

I don't think it'll be as snappy as Windows, but I don't think it's bad.

What version of Mac OS X are you running? 10.2.x, 10.3.x or 10.4?

What version of Mac OS X are you running? 10.2.x, 10.3.x or 10.4?

That could have a big effect - 10.2 onwards was what I consider usable and certainly 10.3.x should give you no problems. The only issue with OSX I have had relates to Entourage in an Exchange environment and that is a Microsoft problem.

I just deleted 4000+ files in command line faster than it took to even show 4000 files in the "Finder." I really dont understand how such a "powerful" machine can be so SLOW. Its not just this stuff though, matlab, pshop, illustrator, all run sluggist at best.

BTW, we commonly refer to ethernet lines as T10, T1, etc.
