EDIT: I didn't mean let's ban tazers - I meant let's allow nightsticks

They cause less deaths and they seem to get criminals in order better
?

You have to get close to use a nightstick. You can fire a taser from a safe distance.

The lethality of any weapon can be dependant on the person weilding it. For instance, I have a cup, and I could kill you with it.

Cops have to get closer with nightsticks, it puts them at more risk.

Nightsticks also generally lead to things like broken skulls...

I think Tazers are fine, but we need some standardized national system of accountability for the proper use of force, that includes penalties severe enough to keep police doing their job properly instead of lazily. As it is, the police code pretty much guarantees that unless you are INSANELY evil, like walking up to 4 year olds at preschool and pumping them full of hollow-points to the forehead, that they can get away with virtually ANYTHING and get away clean. At most, they get PAID leave. Assholes. With accountability, there would probably be a lot fewer of these 'incidents'.

fewer deaths.

As others said, batons require getting up close and personal, putting officers at greater risk. Plus, suspects who have been battered by a baton are a lot worse off than those who have been tasered. At least with a taser the pain goes away almost immediately after the current stops flowing, with a baton you can easily break bones.

Tazers have a place. if a guy has a knife threatening to hurt himself i don't see why not use a tazer on him. sure wouldnt want a cop to go at him with a baton and no reason to shoot unless needed.

I do agree with arkaign that there needs to bemore accuntability and training.

unfortunately that would take real leadership and courage.
something that sorely lacks in our current political climate.

unfortunately we get these lame-brain arguments:

criminals aren't accountable, so why should the police be accountable as well?!

Heaven forbid an officer get hurt when he's trying to taze a 40 year old mental patient who falls 10 feet and dies!

It doesn't matter what you give them, there will be cops who abuse it or use it without thinking and get someone killed.

To be honest, tazers aren't the issue. The issue is pussy cops using tazers to get people to behave, rather than in situations where you actually need to take someone down. It's bullshit to say that "oh well, he was yelling, so I tazed him".

If you have a nightstick and use it, it looks like shit on a video. You always come off looking terrible.

Tazers look dignified!
