i propose a gun that shoots nightsticks.

nightsticks are awesomer than tasers because broken bones, internal bleeding, head trauma/brain damage, higher risk of death and permanent injuries is hilarious.

You guys that want to crucify cops for using tazers are a joke. I have to laugh at you to keep you from making me sick.

THEY'RE USING TASERS IN PLACE OF GUNS IN MANY CASES.

Do SOME cops abuse their power? Of course they do. Just the same way you probably steal from work, or cheat on your wife, or do something under handed to get your way. Do you think cops are any different from you? Oh wait, you're all saints right?!

We are all human, we all suck, and we all are capable of stupid, mean, evil stuff. Especially towards our fellow man. But if you ask me, on the whole, cops are better than most of us because the MAJORITY of them at least hold themselves to some standards of decency and morals.

Do you guys honestly think one of the cops in this 10 ft. fall incident looked at the situation and said "Well, let's kill this crazy bastard with a taser today, I had nothing better to do."?!?!

This naked guy with the light bulb was a threat to others, and more importantly himself. The cops were 100% justified in what they did. Does it suck the guy died? Sure. But seriously, no one set out to kill or harm him.

Hell, you should be pissed at the naked guy weilding a bulb THREATENING TO HARM OTHER PEOPLE. If you wanna coddle his ass and say it's not his fault becasue he was ill then blame the fucking mother or his doctors for not having earlier commited his ass to a hospital if they knew he was that ill.

Ours is a society that wants to blame eveyone else first for our own actions. You wanna talk about accountability with the police, how about you look in a fucking mirror first.

I seem to see as many cases where cops are using tasers in place of wrestling a guy to the ground, and in plenty of cases, instead of WORDS.

That shit is not normal... who the fuck thinks it's normal or even slightly ok to steal from work and cheat on your wife? There's a word for people like that, or actually several words - lying cheating thieving asshole. If cops are like that we're all screwed.

So, we should strive to hold our law enforcement up to the lowest common denominator in society? Hmm, for some reason I just don't feel inspired.

As for 100% justified, I believe the other thread said it went against police regulations.

EDIT: btw-I don't think anyone gets in their car after drinking heavily and thinks I think I'll kill a family of five on the way home from the bar, but we seem to frown on that.

Many cases as in.....a couple youtube videos you watched? Do you honestly think that every time a tazer is used, it gets national media coverage?

People seem to believe that these "don't taze me bro" stories are 100% of the time.

And they need to use their words to solve situations? Do you really think they just sneak up on people and taze them? You have a crazy person being crazy...police talk to crazy person which does nothing because they are crazy...you then try to remove crazy person from crazy situation, which also does not work because they are crazy...you taze crazy person to stop the craziness

So what you are saying is that we should hold officers to the same or lower standards than the general public? Sorry, that is not how it works. Officers need to be held to a HIGHER standard as they are the moral authority in our society.

Answer a simple question: Given that falls of 10 feet or less usually do cause serious injury or death when the person hits their head should the officers, being the professionals they are, recognized that? If so, did the IMMEDIATE risk to those officers justify using force where death was a reasonable possibility?

Show me one person who doesn't do something unethical and I'll show you the beginning of the reason why we wouldn't need cops.

Granted I was using extreme examples, but on the whole the human being is a pretty malicious, malevolent, greedy animal. Guess our views differ. While I respect yours, I can't say that I see many cases of the attributes you describe.

It would make more sense to use narrow beam aerosol sprays to put people to sleep. It would have to be something that oxidized quickly though so it doesn't disperse back to the officers.

No. I have two brothers in law enforcement. They do not abuse their ability to taser someone. The few times my one brother had to he's always said he warned the guy repeatedly and it was either subdue the guy or others were going to be hurt.

Every single time he's used it (not very often) I can tell he wishes he didn't have to, but he says he's glad there's an alternative to drawing his pistol when words don't seem to do.

And before anyone says anything, cops are trained to use words first and foremost to difuse a situation.

No one here was at this, or any other tasing situation. Just because YOU see video, you think you have the whole story. You don't know one way or another what was tried to calm the situation beforehand.

To squisher and sarcastic dwarf:

I'm not sure where you get that I think cops shouldn't be held to high standards. If you wanna twist words, that's your perogative.

Personally, it's the end of my work day and I plan to go home to my family and enjoy that time vs. debating a topic we obviously won't see eye to eye on (not to mention one where you'll read what you will between the lines). this could easily last all night, and I'm just not going there.

EDIT: after reading over my first post let me clarify something. I said "Are there bad/corrupt cops, sure there are", did I mean "I'm ok with that."...fuck no.

Corruption is everywhere, in every sector. I thought I made clear in that post, that if anything, there's less corruption in cops due to them being held to different standards vs. the factory worker, the office worker, etc..

Cops are human, just like the rest of us. I make NO excuse for bad cops, but I don't think that we're talking about bad cops either (in these stories/news articles, etc) so it's not relevant to this conversation.

still, the image is harder to use to rile up hysteria.
cops beating on a guy on the ground just looks bad even if justified.
zapping some idiot so he flops around like a fish is mildly comic...
"don't taze me bro"!
