AnandTech Forum Guidelines

Introduction

In an effort to make our management of the forums as transparent as possible, we have refined our member and posting guidelines and we have created a set of moderator guidelines. It is our hope that we can better satisfy members by being upfront and clear about what we expect from everyone.

We want to give all our members as much freedom as possible while maintaining an environment that encourages productive discussion. It is our desire to encourage our members to share their knowledge and experiences in order to benefit the rest of the community, while also providing a place for people to come and just hang out. To accomplish this, we have decided that a set of guidelines interpreted by our moderators is the best way to move forward.

Micromanaging every member, thread, post, or word is not something we are interested in. Every situation is unique, and we don't feel we can provide the type of forum we want by strictly defining the subject matter and content we allow here.

We also intend to encourage respect and responsibility among members in order to maintain order and civility. Our social forums will have a relaxed atmosphere, but other forums will be expected to remain on-topic and posts should be helpful, relevant and professional.

In order to accomplish the goals we have set forth, members will be expected to abide by the Member and Posting Guidelines provided here. Failure to do so will result in our team of moderators taking action. The options available to a moderator in managing apparent violations of our guidelines will be set forth in our Moderator Guidelines.

Member and Posting Guidelines

Do not use our Forums to post any material, or links to any material, which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise violative of any law. Special exception to the restrictions on vulgarity and profanity are granted ONLY in the social forums. Additionally, special exception to the restriction on sexually oriented material is granted ONLY in the Love & Relationships forum.

All Terms of Service must be followed at all times, or a ban will be instated. Length and permanence of the ban will be set at moderator discretion.

We ask for respect and common decency towards your fellow forum members. This includes adhering to the following guidelines which will be enforced via a combination of member request and moderator discretion.

1) No trolling, flaming or personally attacking members. Deftly attacking ideas and backing up arguments with facts is acceptable and encouraged. Attacking other members personally and purposefully causing trouble with no motive other than to upset the crowd is not allowed.

I think there should have been an SP2 for Windows 7 (NT 6.1). I know mainstream support has ended, but that just ended in January of this year.SP1 for Windows 7 was released in Feb - March 2011 which was just over 4 years ago.Microsoft should have released SP2 for Windows 7 in maybe 2013 or early 2014 and then they could have stopped. As for Windows 8.1 not supporting certain old Athlon dual core CPUs, that is fine as Windows 8/8.1 is meant for new PCs and at least the RAM and CPU speed have not increased much if at all since Vista which is nice.As for the original Athlon 64 dual cores which came out almost 10 years ago in mid-2005 being outdated, well maybe they are, but they still can be very useful today even for some modern things. Sure you cannot play most of the latest games on them well if at all and many other very high end apps, but they are just fine for web browsing and word documents and even basic multimedia of today especially with a descent amount of RAMN and video card. Thus I think the law of diminishing returns has really taken affect the last 10 years regarding computers. I mean a high end computer from 2005 is much more relevant and useful today in 2015 than a high end computer form 1995 would have been in 2005. Agree or disagree on that.

Win7 does not need a SP2,it's not like it's unstable or has serious issues at present.

You also have to remember even Microsoft have limited resources and they like some users have moved on to newer things, you still get extended support until 2020 so not like you are completely shut out of the loop on Win7.

If you want all the latest features etc then look to one of the newer Operating Systems out there.

End of the day just like Microsoft you also have to make decisions.

I totally agree. And not only that, but the updates installed in Windows since Vista (NT6.0) cannot be made permanently installed thus wasting disk space unless they are a service pack in which case you can get rid of the old backup files. And that is also true with Windows 7 and even 8/8.1 as well.At least with Windows NT 5.X (Windows 2000, XP, and 2003), you could make the hotfixes permanent and even roll them up into an unofficial service pack and it made integrating them easier and you could make them permanent. That is the one area Microsoft took a big step back on with regards to Windows NT 6.X (Vista, 7, 8/8.1). I do not know why they would have designed it where the hotfix updates cannot be made permanent and thus waste disk space. We shall see if that changes in Windows 10 (NT 10).

We have come Microsoft shills in here... when market has completely rejected Windows 8, they are raving about it every time Windows 7 is mentioned.

i'd take a second service pack over downloading and installing 800 gajillion updates after a fresh install.

if you install/reinstall windows enough for this to be a legitimate cause of grief, you should look into familiarizing yourself with slipstreaming updates into your ISO (can also potentially remove components or include drivers or other programs, etc)

I've to laugh at that statement being I've Win7 ,Win8,Linux, Vista,XP,WinNT OS discs to name a few but hey believe what you want.
Last time I checked Win7 was done by Microsoft so that statement is even more invalid.

Getting back to reality I think down the road Win10 is going to be a great hit regardless of the FUD or negative comments you see in the forums here.
OS keeps on rolling forward ,too bad some people get stuck in the past for good.

As to the market and rejection(if there is such a thing since even the greatest is on a limited life span),I don't know about you but I never buy anything by what others think, that goes for OS,games, cars or anything you care to name.
Yes I'll be buying Win10 regardless of the FUD I see in here or in the market, get over it as they say .

For the record I've been called a Vista fan,DOS fan,Win7 fan(against some XP users years ago)Win8 fan etc so being called Win10 fan will be nothing new,too bad I've not been called a Linux fan since I use that just as much as Windows and think in some ways it's superior to Windows in general.

You are right, most people here have backup as well, old days we had to download updates via 56K dialup,I can remember doing that on WinXP.

Today it's not much of an issue with fast broadband or having backup etc..

You can make it easy for yourself,I know I have.

Well, I have to take back some of my criticism and blame myself a little.

I was still having BSODs so I ran both Memtest and Windows Memory Diagnostic. Long and short of it is that 1x 8GB DIMM is full of errors. I was at least able to isolate the problems to that.

Word to the wise: run Memtest before installing shit!

I wonder if I should start from scratch again (fearing a corrupt installation or two) or just let sleeping dogs lie. The system seems to be running fine on the whole at this point.

Edit: I've never had a bad DIMM in like 16 years of building PCs!

I've two bad sticks over the years , first was Crucial back in the VIA KT133 motherboard days and Corsair only a few years ago,I had to reinstall the OS.

Never know when it will happen to you.

As to reinstalling?.. Think I would for peace of mind and for anything critical that PC is used for.

I think I'll let it be until the replacement RAM arrives. I'll test it and then decide what to do. But you're probably right.

At least you've got a sense of humour. That's a lot more then most of the internet...

As for defending MS, no, not really. But come on, problems are only as great as one makes them. We obviously have different tolerances.

Fair enough. I just don't like how they're going about things. MS are trying to force people to the windows store and force them to get used to that godawful metro interface so they will buy surface pros and windows phones. Thats their overall strategy.

IMO its a much better strategy to create something fantastic that people will want on their own rather than try to force it by leveraging (and alienating) their desktop/laptop install base. Windows 8 didn't have to be the colossal failure it was, but hey ho, not much can be done about it now.

You should be more careful!.That could be taken the wrong way from some members here .

Maybe you could just copy and paste them over the C:\Windows folder. Would that work?

An old Athlon from 2005 isn't good for anything anymore. Your 2014 era smartphone is as fast.

Please point out the specific serious issues that NT SP5, Win2k SP3, WinXP SP2, Vista SP1 or Win7 RTM had.

Also, I wrote this on the first page:

Yes, it would totally require "infinite resources" for Win7 to be given another service pack, I'm sure.

Furthermore, Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 was released after its mainstream support period by the looks of it:

Obviously. The real question is does this necessary have to be a bad thing? Having tried the 10 technical preview, I don't find the new version that bad actually. Except the lack of aero, and general look. Honestly its 2015, why go with the flat looks-like-something-out-of-the-late-80s look? Not function mind you, that is coming along quite well. Microsoft has also talked about opening the store to include conventional win32-api programs. Of course I can see various pros and cons with this. But having a central place to manage updates and the like, it could be good. Especially for the casual crowd.

IMO its a much better strategy to create something fantastic that people will want on their own rather than try to force it by leveraging (and alienating) their desktop/laptop install base. Windows 8 didn't have to be the colossal failure it was, but hey ho, not much can be done about it now.

I agree fully on that. 8 is a colossal failure, again especially with the casuals, which after all are the majority of the market. I can't count the amount of bad PR I've heard from such users regarding 8. For their own sakes Microsoft should ditch it ASAP. Which, coincidently, they seem to be willing to...

I think a central store for traditional programmes would be a great idea.

Look at Steam with games. The thought of Steam not existing and just dealing with all the different publishers through their own websites would be terrible compared to the convenience of Steam

Also, I wrote this on the first page:

You are missing my point since I was talking about Win7 only without SP2,Win7 with SP1 has ironed out all the serious stuff, sure you have updates on WU but then that happens on virtually every Windows OS,Microsoft in their wisdom have decided it does not need a SP2 and have moved on to better things,if you want to stay with Win7 fine, take 7 as it is,but remember plenty of good Operating Systems out there and they all have updates so yet again you will be downloading updates again.

Also did not Microsoft say they are trying to move away from service packs awhile back?

Win7 was released back in 2009 so yes there will be a lot of updates considering it's now 2015,Win7 is now on extended support only(until 2020) and is on its way out,SP2 at this time is rather pointless.
You can't blame Microsoft for concentrating on Win10.
