Why wasn't HL2 on DVD?

I backed up the Steam copy onto a DVD+R, popped it into a DVD case, printed off a cover, and made my own Half Life 2 DVD.

The UK only has a DVD edition.
You Americans are just stupid Obviously the publisher doesn't believe that there's enough demand for DVD games, so they put it out on CD's instead.

I got it on Steam so what do I care...

But for games with all these discs, they really need to start going to DVD. It was a pain installing Doom 3.

I don't think it makes a difference. Who (other than those who don't have DVD drives) would NOT buy HL2 just because it wasn't available on DVD? They're selling the copies they need to.

But, then again, I'm sure if they only sold HL2 in DVD form, many people without DVD drives would purchase them (after all, they are $15).

Yea, that's pretty weird.
Plus any system that doesn't have a DVD drive these days probably doesn't have the mojo to handle the game's requirements effectively.
I paid an extra $25 for the "privilege" of getting it on dvd(CE):disgust:

I'm sure every system that has the "mojo" to play the game also has an internet connection, but you still hear people whining about that requirement. It's simple... no matter what Valve does, they can't win. Period.

But the internet activation doesn't do anything for the consumer and makes it less convenient to play the game while people actually want the game on DVD because it makes it more convenient. Not a fair analogy.

I'm not particularly a "Valve-basher." But I would like to know why Europe gets their game via DVD, while the people who live where the game was developed have to settle for 5 CDs or pay a hefty premium to get DVD. Quite a fair complaint I would think.

Because having a DVD instead of 5 discs is a major selling point for the collector's edition.

The only reason I wanted the collector's edition in the first place is so I could have a DVD instead of 5 CDs, but I ended up getting the regular because of a Hot Deal.

Sure it is. It makes the game much more convenient for many people to receive updates and play online. Getting the game off of Steam was easy as pie.

However, your argument doesn't matter since one can get the game on CD and DVD, so there should be no whining there (but of course there is).

Facts:

As many as 22% of Steam users don't have DVD drives.

-no distinction was made for America vs Europe, so why was the DVD distruted in Europe and not the US?

DVD is available in America in the Collector's Edition for $25.00 more (for a whopping $80).

-"since one can get the game on CD and DVD, so there should be no whining"
Duh, a $25 surcharge is hardly equitable between US vs Europe....

"Because having a DVD instead of 5 discs is a major selling point for the collector's edition"
-true that, still, I assume they want to sell some Collector's Editions in Europe?

i prefer cd over dvd because even tho the install is a pain it's less to make into an iso. one ~500mb cd takes up less space than 5 on a dvd. i use alcohol to make an image and then load up whichever i'm playing so i can keep the cds into their cases. with dvds i'd be eating up much more hdd space than i am now. you can't use no-cd patches all the time because online games will give you fits (punkbuster) if you try to get a on pure server with one. so for us that hate cd swapping it's a better solution. besides, i only install most games once. it's not like you're installing every other day (and if you are you have bigger problems).

Complain to Vivendi. They make those decisions, not Valve.

You're just an instigator kid, you're the one who brought up Valve in this thread, no one else.

I brought up Valve when it was an issue they were responsible for. Perhaps you forgot your earlier post:

"I'm not particularly a "Valve-basher." But I would like to know why Europe gets their game via DVD, while the people who live where the game was developed have to settle for 5 CDs or pay a hefty premium to get DVD. Quite a fair complaint I would think."

I do believe that you, sir, mentioned Valve in regards to the retail distribution. Hmm...
