Yesterday morning my main machine dropped its network and totally refused to get an DHCP lease, even after resetting the router (dhcp server).
I booted into my gaming OS install and got the same issue - unlikely to be a software issue then. I should point out that my motherboard is an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe and I was using the Nvidia NIC and the onbaord MArvell NIC was disabled in the BIOS (has been for months).
I tested a second machine (an ASUS A8n-E) for DHCP lease and it worked fine, indicating that the router was fine. I tried manually applying an IP address and here's where it went strange - The networking applet basically hangs, and checking thru the command line I can see the default gateway is applied but the IP and Subnet Mask are 0.0.0.0
I temprarily gave up and enabled the MArvell NIC and installed the drivers and got an adresse etc - that's how I'm writing this actually. I tried swapping over the cables and router/switch ports between the Nvidia and MArvell NICs, but no joy.
Then, this morning, I find my wifes PC is having a problm getting an IP address. I've just tried to apply a static address to that and get the same 0.0.0.0 for the IP and subnet, but the default gateway applies ok. The applet basically hangs. Her machine is based on an ASUS K8N-E and doesn't have a second NIC so it's basically off the network for the minute.
I was prepared to accept that perhaps I have a physical issue with my machines NIC subce that would fit with the symptoms (I should also point out that I get the orange connectivity LED but no flashing activity LED). Howerver, for my wifes machine to suffer the same fate within 24hours seems incredulous.
So far, a google search isn't shedding light and I'm fresh out of ideas (the event log shows nothing other than service failures due to no IP), beyond of course getting a PCI NIC for the wife for the time being. Anyone any ideas?
cheers
